How it’s Made

Creating a far-out mandala pattern reverse ice tie-dye shirt is like taking a trip into the world of colorful zen! First, gather your supplies: a dark-colored cotton shirt, either bleach or an out-white brightener (OWB) solution, ice, rubber bands, squeeze bottles, gloves, a plastic rack, and a plastic bin.

Start by laying your dark shirt flat and folding it to create that sweet mandala design. One groovy method is to fold the shirt in half, then in quarters, and keep folding until you’ve got a narrow triangle. Secure those folds with rubber bands so it all stays together.

Next, set up your reverse ice dyeing station by placing a plastic rack over a plastic bin to catch all the drippy goodness. Place your folded and banded shirt on the rack and cover it with a good layer of ice. Mix your bleach or OWB solution (about one part bleach or OWB to two parts water) and pour it into a squeeze bottle. Slip on your gloves to protect your hands, and carefully drizzle the solution over the ice-covered shirt. As the ice melts, it’ll carry the solution through the fabric, lightening it and creating those intricate mandala patterns.

Let the ice do its thing, melting away and spreading the solution, which can take a few hours. Keep an eye on it to make sure you get just the right amount of lighting. Once the ice has melted completely and the color change is to your liking, rinse the shirt thoroughly with cold water to stop the bleaching process.

Finally, give the shirt a wash in cold water with a mild detergent to remove any remaining bleach or OWB, and let it dry. You’ll have a beautiful, one-of-a-kind mandala-patterned reverse ice tie-dye shirt, full of unique contrasts and peaceful vibes. Peace, love, and creativity!
