Meet the Maker
Hi, I'm Deirdre, the Craft Mask Maker. I am an artist who works with fiber, paint, mixed media and many other materials. I moved to North Carolina over 2 years ago with almost as much fabric as in the local fabric store. My plan was to sort through it once I got down here. Then Covid-19 came and fabric was hard to come by. This was something I was prepared for. I made many masks and tweaked the pattern for better fit and breathability. I donated lots of these masks. Then CDC guidelines changed and I adapted new techniques and added new materials with new qualities, I continued to tweak my mask pattern and donate masks.
The masks that I list here are ones I'm really proud to say I made. Each mask takes approx. 20 to 30 minutes to construct. My large studio is set up with multiple sewing machines and sergers so that I don't have to switch back and forth between settings. The fabrics I offer are a combination of modern new fabrics and desired vintage and imported fabrics that you won't find anywhere else. The specialty fabrics I use are second to none.
My artwork has been published in numerous magazines and books and is in several prestigious private collections, including in the collection of Mrs. Joanna S. Rose.

How it’s Made
This mask is constructed in 4 layers using different types of material. When you use several materials you are making a complex filtering structure. Three of these layers are sewn into one washable unit. the 4th layer is a washable, removable filter. This adjustable, multi-layer design allows the wearer to select how much filtering they wish to wear. This choice could be 3 or 4+* layers which the wearer can adjust. For example: when you are out for a walk or with your "safe circle" wearing 3 layers could be what you choose. If you have to be in a crowd or in other conditions which make you wish you had more protection, you could add the removable washable layer (LAYER 3). Additional disposable filters can also be added.
- LAYER 1 -- Fashion Fabric: 100% cotton.
- This is the pretty side that people see and starts the filtering process.
- LAYER 2 -- Middle Liner Fabric: 100% cotton
- This is a plain white cotton which add structure to the mask.

- One is a PM2.5 filter
- One is melt-blown 100% virgin polypropylene fiber, which has been certified by Nelson Lab for use a mask filtration material.
