Meet Kacee, the creative mind behind Minimal Loot Design! By day, Kacee keeps things healthy as a registered dietitian, but her evenings and weekends are a different story. This California maker, based in Atascadero, transforms into a concrete artist, taking inspiration from nature, architecture, and minimalist design to craft beautiful pieces. We got to know Kacee and a bit more about her business through a series of questions.
Briefly Tell us about yourself:
“I work as a dietitian during the day, but on weekends and evenings, I like to indulge in my creative side. I’ve always enjoyed having a creative outlet, and this passion has been with me for as long as I can remember.” Some of my favorite activities include going hiking and immersing myself in nature, experimenting with woodworking, and taking on DIY projects around my home.
Tell us how you got started working with Concrete:
The industrial look of concrete has always enamored me, and I wanted to try making some pieces for my own home. After much experimentation and practice, I gained the courage to start selling my pieces to the world.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I am inspired by nature, architecture, and minimalist interior design. Sharing my work with others motivates me to keep creating, and the positive feedback I receive from my customers fuels me even more!
Where do you create?
I currently work out of my garage shop. I have sections for mixing, casting, and finishing my pieces. When I’m ready to package and ship Items, I head upstairs, where I have a shipping station.
Tell us more about your process:
To create a new piece, I first need to design the shape I want to make into a mold. I create the shape by using materials such as clay or 3D-printed designs. I then make a mold out of silicone. Once it sets, it’s ready to be filled with concrete.
What does a typical day as a maker look like for you?
I typically start the day by de-molding pieces that have set overnight. I then mix up some new concrete and pour it into various molds. The last step is to sand and seal each hardened concrete piece. The sanding gives the rough edges a smoother finish, and the sealer protects the pieces against stains and moisture.
What is your favorite material to work with?
I enjoy experimenting with custom concrete mixtures, which typically include varying amounts of cement, sand, and gravel. My favorite products to make are the “speckled” colors. These need to be sanded down to show the sand within the material. Although the sanding process is messy, I find it relaxing and therapeutic.
What is your most popular product?
My most popular product is the Bubble Concrete Tray. This piece features a blob-like shape with smooth curves. It can be used as a catch-all dish or as a decorative display piece.
Why did you choose to sell on Goimagine?
I chose to sell on Goimagine because I support the company’s vision. My products are made by hand, and I want my customers to know and trust that.
Is there anything else that makes your shop unique?
I create pieces that can fit into a variety of design styles, suitable for any room in the home. My vision is to incorporate natural shapes into my designs, in order to bring an organic feel to the home. All of my products are handmade by me, every step of the way.
