How it’s Made

This collection of owls was a lot of fun to do! They were all made digitally, on my 12.9" M1 iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil in Procreate, and they are the best of a series of these creatures I did specifically for greeting cards.

Owls have the most expressive character even though they're not doing it on purpose. Their demeanor and visage can be at times shockingly hilarious and conversely frightening and downright terrifying, depending on the species. They can cock their heads at fun angles which in turn changes their entire personality in moments. They can be aloof, predatory, a bundle of energy, and childlike all at the same time. And their eyes. Oh, their eyes...

When I drew these, I was looking for opportunities to practice feathers and the incredibly rich detail their markings have. I wanted to do things that were complicated so I could experiment with visually simplifying and distilling all that minutia into something that could be visually interesting without getting lost in realism. I think I succeeded on some better than on some of the others.

I print all these cards on set at a time on my own in-studio printer, a Pixma Pro 200. It has 8 dye-based colors, and with the paper I use I can accomplish rich depths of color and fine textures that really make the birds pop off the card. Then I package everything up and send it to you.

Shop Reviews (1)

I purchased a set of waterfall cards from Coreyartus Imagery, but I don’t plan to use them as greetings; I actually purchased them to use in my personal meditation practice. When I saw Corey’s waterfall scenes, I fell in love with their ability to transport me into a different world. They’re even more beautiful in person. I’m really pleased with this purchase as well as the great customer service and thoughtful packaging by Corey. Such a wonderful shop to buy from!
