How it’s Made

Creating a groovy mandala-patterned reverse tie-dye shirt is like embarking on a colorful adventure! First, gather your gear: a dark-colored cotton shirt, either bleach or an out-white brightener (OWB) solution, rubber bands, squeeze bottles, gloves, and a plastic bin.

Start by laying your dark shirt flat and folding it to create that awesome mandala design. One cool method is to fold the shirt in half, then in quarters, and keep folding until you have a narrow triangle. Secure those folds with rubber bands to keep everything nice and tight.

Next, set up your reverse dyeing station by placing your folded and banded shirt in a plastic bin to catch any drips. Mix your bleach or OWB solution (about one part bleach or OWB to two parts water) and carefully pour it into a squeeze bottle. Slip on your gloves to protect your hands, and gently apply the solution along the folds and creases of the shirt. The bleach or OWB, will lighten the fabric and create that intricate mandala pattern.

Let the solution do its thing for about 10–15 minutes, but keep an eye on it—you want just the right amount of lightening. Once the color change is to your liking, rinse the shirt thoroughly with cold water to stop the process.

Finally, wash the shirt in cold water with a mild detergent to remove any remaining bleach or OWB, and let it dry. What you'll have is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind mandala-patterned reverse tie-dye shirt, full of unique contrasts and peaceful vibes. Peace, love, and creativity!
