How it’s Made

Creating a groovy mandala with a spine pattern on the back and a reverse ice tie-dye shirt is a journey into the world of psychedelic designs! First, gather your gear: a dark-colored cotton shirt, either bleach or an out-white brightener (OWB) solution, ice, rubber bands, squeeze bottles, gloves, a plastic rack, and a plastic bin.

Start by laying your dark shirt flat and folding it to create that rad mandala design. One cool method is to fold the shirt in half vertically, then in quarters, and keep folding until you have a narrow triangle. This will be the front of your shirt. For the spine on the back, fold the shirt in half lengthwise along the center, then pleat it accordion-style along that fold. Secure your folds with rubber bands to keep them all in place.

Next, set up your reverse ice dyeing station by placing a plastic rack over a plastic bin to catch all the drippy goodness. Place your folded and banded shirt on the rack and cover it with a nice layer of ice. Mix your bleach or OWB solution (about one part bleach or OWB to two parts water) and pour it into a squeeze bottle. Slip on your gloves to protect your hands, and carefully drizzle the solution over the ice-covered shirt. As the ice melts, it’ll carry the solution through the fabric, creating those intricate mandala patterns with a cool spine effect on the back.

Let the ice melt completely, which can take a few hours. Keep an eye on the color change to make sure it’s just the right amount of lightening. Once the ice has melted and the colors have transformed to your liking, rinse the shirt thoroughly with cold water to stop the bleaching process.

Finally, wash the shirt in cold water with a mild detergent to remove any remaining bleach or OWB, and let it dry. You’ll have a beautiful, one-of-a-kind mandala pattern with a spine on the back and a reverse ice tie-dye shirt, full of unique contrasts and peaceful vibes. Peace, love, and creativity!
