Meet the Maker

I am a Massachusetts native living in New Mexico with my husband, Paul. We have a small 2-acre "ranchette" close to the banks of the beautiful Rio Grande. I garden and raise chickens. A lot of my inspiration comes from the beauty of the natural environment: bugs, flowers, critters and birds. A lot of my work is based off of photographs I've taken.

I've been making "things" all my life and I've now decided to make more of an effort to sell what I make. Most people like looking at things in person so selling online is little more difficult. I'm not a professional photographer so I struggle with getting the photoa right.

I owe most of my creative spirit to my parents who were children of immigrants. If they needed something, they would make it themselves. They always encouraged me to do the same. "If you want something - make it!"

My dad, now retired, spent his career as a mechanical engineer but he is also a master craftsman, welder, builder and artist. A perfectionist. When he makes something it looks like it was created by a machine. My mom, a gentle soul, was a prolific writer and amateur genealogist who had a newspaper column. They had nicknames for all of their children. I was called "SueBug".

I started working with my dad at a very early age. I helped him remodel our houses, I'd hand the tiles to him while he tiled the new bathroom, or mix his plaster when he was finishing a wall. I did my best to help him strip wallpaper, even though, at the time I could reach up only about 24 inches. At least he got the bottom of the wall done.

From working with my dad, I became familiar with a lot of the construction materials and methods: wood, glue, tile... I got a hold of cement and started making small cement faces. I'd paint them with Testors paint. My dad didn't even get angry at me when I glued them to the wall in his office. (They may still be there as I think I used epoxy.)

Soon I was cutting up tin cans and making flowers; painting rocks and gluing them together.. then I discovered oil paint and water color and paper mache. I was lucky to live in the same town as watercolor artist Christopher Gorey, who was a friend of my brother's. Chris taught me a lot about watercolor painting techniques. I attended the Worcester Art Museum School (Worcester Massachusetts) for a summer where I was encourage, even more to add a wild freedom to my paintings.

How it’s Made

How I Make My Purses

I make my purses with commercially-available fabric and materials. I use cotton a lot. Some items are made from brocade or silk, both of which are difficult to work with because they are slippery and they fray. Some of my fabrics are vintage and therefore out of print and no longer available. The price of each purse generally depends on the price of the materials and the difficulty and complexity in making it. Recently, I've started designing my own fabric. The printing process is expensive and that adds to the cost of the item, but also gives the purse a unique look and feel.

Silk, brocade and vinyl seem to be the most expensive. A lot of vinyls are made to look like fine leather, which is very pretty but recently I've discovered brightly colored vinyl, so I hope to be producing some new items from that.

Most of my purses are made with all new materials including the interfacing inside that allows the purse to be somewhat rigid. However, occasionally, I like to use recycled fabric from clothing such as denim jeans. All recycled fabric is washed thoroughly in hot water before being made into an item to sell. This serves two purposes: it cleans the fabric well and it also shrinks it so that it will not shrink after it's made into a purse. All of my items made with recycled fabric (including beads) will be stated as such in the description. Textile waste is a problem on our lovely planet. According to the Environment Protection Agency, Americans generate 16 million tons of textile waste each year, equaling just over six percent of total municipal waste (for context, plastics make up 13 percent of our waste stream).

I put standard interfacing inside the purse. The rigidity of the purse is determined by the interfacing I use. For my lightweight purses I use a very thin interfacing or no interfacing at all. Lightweight purses are foldable/crushable and the rigid purses are a little heavier.

The zippers are Nylon Coil Zippers with metal zipper pulls. In addition I usually add something to the zipper pull to make it easier to grasp. My zipper pulls are usually made out of an enamel charm, a crystal charm or a leather string. The purse hardware is metal and sewn into the fabric so a strap can be attached to the purse.

I try to communicate the look, feel and size of each purse by giving you a diagram with dimensions.

Shop Policies

PLEASE NOTE:

On October 3rd, 2021 the US post office implemented new rates and shipping/arrival times.

Please see https://about.usps.com/newsroo...

Processing Time
The processing time is the time I need to pack an item and bring it to a shipping facility. At this time I do not take custom orders so all of my products are already made and just need to be packaged and shipped. My customers and my shop are very important to me so I give customers orders a very high priority in my day-to-day activities.
In general, I give myself 1-2 business days to be safe but I usually ship within 24 hours. If something happens and I cannot make that deadline I will notify you.

Estimated Shipping Time
This is a tricky one - This is an estimate of how long the post office or other shipping companies will take to get your item to your doorstep. Usually the US Post Office will give an estimate when the product is shipped. The shipping companies are separate entities that I have no control over. They each have their own way of estimating delivery times. Under normal circumstances, you should receive your item within 1-2 weeks. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has severely effected the shipping industry around the world. In some rare cases shipping may take as long as 3-4 weeks!

When I Ship Orders

I ship Monday thru Saturday, according to the hours that the US Post office is open.  It is closed on Federal Holidays.

  • Monday 7:30am - 5:00pm
  • Tuesday 7:30am - 5:00pm
  • Wednesday 7:30am - 5:00pm
  • Thursday 7:30am - 5:00pm
  • Friday 7:30am - 5:00pm
  • Saturday 9:00am - 12:00pm
  • Sunday Closed
