We would love to introduce you to the talented creative behind Among Strings. Nelly creates micro macramé jewelry inspired by nature from her home in Maryland. She turned her creative passion into a full-time business about a year ago. You can see the attention to detail in every product she offers in her vibrant shop. We learned more about Nelly and her business through a series of questions.
Briefly tell us about yourself:
My name is Dannelys Figueroa, but you can call me Nelly. I’ve married my high school sweetheart, Ramon, for six fantastic years. He’s not just any guy; he’s a paramedic in the Air Force (a proud wife speaking). We have a beautiful girl named Daniela, a 12-year-old rocking the 7th grade, and the cuddliest cat named Mochi. When I’m not spending time with family, you’ll find me lost in books, fueled by coffee, or watching movies. But, I always end up in my other happy place, creating beautiful micro macrame jewelry.
Is there a story behind your shop name?
Before turning my macrame passion into a business, picture me on my living room floor, in a colorful chaos of strings. It was like I was made of strings myself! They somehow managed to escape the living room and spread their presence everywhere (even in the bathroom!). So, when the time came to name my shop, it was a no-brainer. I was literally surrounded by strings, and ‘Among Strings’ felt like the perfect, playful name!
How did Among Strings get started?
I make micro macrame jewelry inspired mainly by nature, basically a garden for your ears! It all started during the pandemic year 2020, and I just landed in the States after the Air Force brought us here from beautiful Puerto Rico. (Wepa!) With some extra time on my hands, I stumbled upon a YouTube video, a tutorial on making macrame bracelets. I immediately ordered a rainbow of strings online. Little did I know I would fall in love with the art of macrame. My first creation was a not-so-well-made but full-of love-pink bracelet with a tiny cactus pattern I made for my daughter. And just like that, my passion for making micro macrame jewelry was born!
When did this become your full-time business?
I’ve been a full-time business owner for nearly a year now; my passion has transformed into my full-time job, all thanks to the incredible support from my family and, of course, the amazing people who believe in my craft. Before Among Strings, I was a caregiver/teacher for the tiniest and adorable little humans aged 1 to 3. It’s been a joyful transition from one fulfilling role to another!
Where does your inspiration come from?
One of my biggest inspirations is nature, whether it is the colors, shapes, or seasons. The best source of creativity is everywhere; we have to look up! But wait, there’s more! My 12-year-old Danniela, is not just my daughter, she’s also my brainstorming buddy. Together, we came up with the most fantastic ideas! Of course, Instagram and Pinterest play their part too. So, when I need that extra boost, I use those platforms, always coming back with a fresh perspective and a head full of exciting new projects. My biggest inspiration is knowing that someone around the country is wearing a piece of my heart.
Tell us about your workspace.
I’ve been blessed to have a cozy corner right in the heart of my home. I’ve got not one, but two surfaces, lucky me! The main one is my trusty desk, the birthplace of all my jewelry. But here’s the fun twist: I’ve also claimed a picnic table as my own (yes, you read that right!). This DIY spot is the center for all things administrative. My printer and my laptop live there. It’s also the official packaging station where every order gets its final touch of care before making its way to a new home.
What does your day as a maker look like?
My day starts at 7 AM with a steaming cup of coffee that sets me in motion. Once I’ve dropped off my daughter at school, it’s time to conquer the day. I start with small house chores, which is my strategy to stay organized and have more time to make. From then is hands-on! Post office runs, prototyping, taking pictures, and everything in between. Once my daughter gets out of school, it’s time for dinner and ending my day with a good movie, book, or both.
Explain your creative process.
I’m a visual maker, and my trusty tool is a sketchbook. (I’ll admit, drawing isn’t my forte, but hey, it gets the job done!). Every design of an idea is on those pages, along with a material list that I might need to bring to life. When it is time to create, I flip through the sketchbook until I find what I’m motivated to make. Some ideas become entire collections, while others become unique pieces that find their way into my shop.
What is your favorite material to work with?
The waxed polyester cord from Linhasita. It’s my go-to to make every piece, making them not just beautiful but also lightweight and durable. Now, when it comes to picking a favorite among all my pieces, my new Tiny Hearts Studs from my Valentine’s Collection steal the show. They’re the tiniest in my shop, versatile enough to go from casual to dressy without being too much, and suitable for all ages.
What is your most popular product?
The champions of last year were my Falling Leaves Dangle Earrings. What’s special about them is their earthy tones, making them a seasonal hit and a year-round favorite. Now, the Heart Shaped Earrings and the Cupid’s Bow Earrings are going to the top. I think this piece will steal the spotlight this time around.
Why did you choose goimagine?
Before being a full-time jewelry maker, I taught and cared for little ones aged 1-3. It was a role that filled my heart because, in those precious hours, I knew I was adding kindness to their childhood memories. Choosing Goimagine was a no-brainer for me because it’s not just a platform; it’s a community that resonates with my passion for positively impacting children’s lives. The fact that they donate all their profits towards children in need was reason enough. Our little ones always come first, and that crystal clear commitment from Goimagine makes it more than just a marketplace; it’s a community with a heart.
Is there anything else that makes your shop unique?
What sets my shop and me apart is that every piece is not just a product; it’s a piece of my heart! I pour my creativity into designing each item, using the magic of micro macrame with my own two hands. I’m always looking for new ways to innovate with this technique to differentiate from others. And it’s not just about the jewelry; it’s about building a community. I love involving my customers in the creative process, making them feel like more than just orders. When they order from me, they’re not just buying a piece; they’re becoming a part of a community, ordering from a friend who puts her heart and soul into each creation.
