Meet the Maker

Hello and welcome to Allison Martin Studios! Thanks for stopping by my shop today!

Becoming a candlemaker happened by accident. My love for scented candles was put on hold for years due to sensitivities to synthetic fragrances. However, a conversation with a friend sparked my interest in beeswax and its air purifying qualities.

With a stash of a few empty jars, I ventured into candle making, driven by a desire to create something I could enjoy without triggering allergies or headaches.

Researching responsibly sourced and natural ingredients, I found myself excited about being able to enjoy scented candles again. In the midst of all this, I was feeling burnt out from my corporate job, so I decided to fully embrace a long-unrealized dream of starting my own business. After months of testing, I found a way to make candles I could enjoy and knew there had to be others who share my struggles.

In lighting one of my candles, I want to promote a cozy reminder for us to take moments to slow down and be present in our lives. I aim to offer a sense of comfort with each candle, ensuring they are crafted with materials and ingredients that are non-toxic, and align with my values of sustainability and responsible sourcing. For me, it's about more than just creating a beautiful product; it's about remembering that people matter and this planet matters.

All candles are hand poured and made in small batches by me in my apartment in Portland, Oregon. Every single detail is important. From what does into making the candle, to the labels, to the packing materials. Materials are responsibly sourced and environmentally friendly (see individual listings for details).

I hope you love them as much as I do!

How it’s Made

Every candle I make begins with a simple goal: to bring clean, natural light into your space—without compromising your health or the planet. My process is deeply intentional, hands-on, and guided by a passion for wellness and sustainability.

Years ago, I couldn't even light a candle without triggering headaches or allergic reactions from synthetic fragrances. That frustration sparked a journey of research and experimentation—one that led me to the clean, golden beauty of 100% pure beeswax. Unlike paraffin, it burns cleanly and even purifies the air by releasing negative ions. From the outset, I’ve used only responsibly sourced beeswax from ethical beekeepers—honoring both the integrity of the material and the sustainability of the craft.

I carefully scent each candle using only pure, aromatherapy grade, essential oils, blended in small batches to preserve their integrity. You'll never find synthetic fragrances, phthalates, or parabens in my candles—just nature-derived ingredients that are gentle on your senses.

Each candle is poured, wicked, and finished by hand, one at a time, in my home studio. From trimming the wicks to measuring each ingredient with precision, no part of the process is outsourced or automated. This allows me to maintain quality control at every stage and infuse each candle with the care and attention only a handmade product can offer. This ensures exceptional quality and allows me to craft each piece with care, intention, and love.

What began as a personal search for safe, beautiful light has grown into a small-batch candle studio focused on wellness, sustainability, and slowing down. I hope my candles help you breathe a little deeper, feel a little cozier, and enjoy the simple rituals that bring light into everyday life.

Recycling or Reusing Candle Container

To remove the remaining wax & re-use your candle container, place the container in the freezer. Once the beeswax has frozen, push the wick tab toward the side of the glass. The wax and tab should pop right out. If freezing the wax does not remove all of the wax, allow the jar to come back to room temperature. Once the jar has fully thawed, slowly pour hot water into the glass. The wax will melt and rise to the top. Once the wax has solidified, pop the disk of wax out of the container. This process may need to be repeated a few times. Once the beeswax is completely removed, the container can then be washed with warm, soapy water or placed in the dishwasher.
