How it’s Made
Creating a groovy mandala-patterned ice-dyed tie-dye shirt is a fun and colorful adventure! First, gather your materials: a white cotton shirt, some vibrant fiber-reactive dye powders, soda ash, ice, squeeze bottles, a plastic rack, a plastic bin, gloves, and rubber bands. Soak the shirt in a soda ash solution for about 15 minutes to help the dye really pop, then wring out the excess.
Now, for the fun part—making your mandala pattern! Lay the shirt flat and start folding it to create that beautiful, symmetrical design. A cool way to do this is to fold the shirt in half, then in quarters, and keep folding until you have a neat little triangle. Secure those folds with rubber bands so they stay nice and tight.
Set up your ice-dying station by placing a plastic rack over a plastic bin to catch all the drippy goodness. Place your folded and banded shirt on the rack. Pile a layer of ice on top of the shirt and sprinkle your chosen dye powders over the ice. As the ice melts, it’ll spread the dye in a totally unique and magical way.
Let the ice work its magic, melting and soaking the shirt with those awesome colors. This can take a few hours, but for the best results, leave it be for a full 24 hours. Once the dye has done its thing, rinse the shirt in cold water until it runs clear. Give it a wash in cold water with a mild detergent and let it dry.
