Meet the Maker
deja studios is the name of the artist collective owned by Deki McKenney.
Deki McKenney's interest in visual arts grew out of a lifelong love of working with her hands. Her early interests were influenced by her parents. Deki's mother was always involved in creative endeavors and her family’s paint store included a framing and art supply department keeping her artistic side stimulated throughout her childhood.
Deki saw how framing could bring a piece of art to life and later used those skills in her own gallery business. Her early studies focused on the arts as well as languages.
Deki was quickly swept up by the computer age as she excelled in programming languages, Eventually, Deki earned a degree in data science retiring from a successful technology career. Though It was a demanding vocation, her interest in the arts never waned and she continually dabbled in sketching, painting, pottery, quilting, origami, fiber arts and jewelry.
During her career, Deki also pursued entrepreneurial opportunities, co-owning an online tea business in the late 90’s as well as art gallery ownership with another local artist from 2004 – 2011.
Deki started hand spinning her own art yarns in 2012 and later felting wool from her nephew’s small 4-H flock. These beautiful rare breed fleeces can be seen in a lot of the yarns and felted pieces she created. Deki McKenney has sold her work in several venues in CT over the years.
More recently she can be found tinkering with paper models, exploring jewelry design and creating journal supplies at deja studios.
