Hi, I’m Paula Bowers! I’ve been creating pottery for over 12 years, drawing inspiration from the rich history of South Carolina ceramics, the natural beauty of our family farm, and the music that moves me.
My work is all about joy—whimsical, functional pieces designed to be used and loved every day, yet crafted with the care and quality to last a lifetime.
How it’s Made
The Avett Sisters Mug starts with hand-rolled clay slabs, shaped and textured to form the mug’s body. The dotted texture at the top and carved swirl designs at the bottom are added with handmade rollers and stamps to give it a rich, tactile surface. The central image—two friends sitting on a bench, arms wrapped in a loving hug—is sculpted and applied by hand, with each small detail carefully carved to bring out the character and charm.
Once the mug is bone dry, it’s bisque fired in the kiln. Afterward, each part of the scene is hand-painted with underglazes and glazes to bring it to life, from the denim shorts to the red heart on the bench. A final glaze firing at over 2200°F finishes the mug with a glossy, durable surface — ready for coffee, tea, or a cozy reminder of the sisterhood you cherish.
