About this Product

It's a tale as old as time. An innovative young jewelry maker takes on the challenge to create a prize-worthy piece based on the classic story of Beauty and the Beast in 2 versions. For the "Fairytale" version, freshwater pearls, dark amethyst, pink cat's-eye glass, and goldtone flowers play in a precise pattern on one side. In the "Princess" version, blue and yellow glass beads take the place of the amethyst and cat's-eyes. Both are soft and delicate with a timeless beauty, just like Belle. The other side of both designs features a chaotic mix of genuine horn and bone elements, copper swirls, painted wood tube beads, tiger's eye chips and mahogany obsidian rounds. It is as dark, bold, and unrefined as the Beast himself, but with a touch of class that reminds us that there's truly a prince underneath. The two sides come together in the front with a beautiful red polyclay rose pendant with glass leaves, seed bead stem, and tiger's-eye thorn. The perfect flower indicates that there's still ample time for love to grow. A beautiful young woman and a hideous beast put aside their differences, making a lovely necklace together. The designs are finished with a small-yet-mighty 2-tone magnet clasp in antique brass on Beast's side and bright goldtone on Belle's side.

Stephen says, "Genuine pearls need to be separated or cushioned to keep other elements from rubbing holes in them. I used tiny silicone rings to protect the pearls in these necklaces."

Meet the Maker

Beth Ann Borth, Owner & Lead Designer

My jewelry making journey started with making a “grandkids” birthstone necklace for my mom in ‘09.  Then came angel birthstone necklaces for my sister and sisters-in-law.  The odd bracelet here, a couple pairs of earrings there.  In 2017 my younger son, Stephen, convinced me to try to make it a business.  He jumped in making gemstone jewelry, and my older son, Andrew, followed weaving chainmail rings.  And so Angelic Relics & Modern Treasures was born.  The “relics” portion of our name comes from the fact we like to take broken jewelry, weird estate pieces, or things that were never meant to be jewelry, and turn them into unique new jewelry pieces.  We had a good couple years run, but pandemic schedules and Andrew striking out on his own meant we had to shelve the business.  Schedules have finally shifted back, so we redesigned our logo, dropped the last half of our name, and launched a new online store.  Thanks for checking us out!

How it’s Made

Materials used: glass, freshwater pearls, amethyst, wood, horn, bone, tiger's-eye, mahogany obsidian, goldtone components, copper components, antique brass components, polyclay, silicone

What are freshwater pearls?

Unlike any other gemstone, pearls are cultured and farmed from clams instead of being mined. Freshwater pearls, also called Chinese freshwater pearls, are pearls that come from freshwater clams instead of saltwater clams. They make up the majority of the pearls produced every year, but they're usually lower quality than saltwater pearls. Any less expensive jewelry that has genuine (i.e. not glass or plastic) pearls most likely uses freshwaters.

What is amethyst?

Amethyst is crystalline quartz that has been colored purple by iron impurities. Found worldwide and prized since prehistoric times, amethyst ranges in tone from intense dark "Siberian" purple to delicate "Rose de France" lavender. Long-term exposure to light will gradually lighten amethyst's color, while exposure to heat over 300°C will turn it into yellowish or orangey citrine. Fun fact: the ancient Greeks believed that drinking wine from an amethyst vessel would keep the drinker from becoming drunk.

What is tiger's-eye?

Tiger's-eye (AKA tiger's eye or tiger eye) is a type of quartz that forms in shades of blue, green, brown, or red. It occurs when quartz forms around parallel fibers of the mineral crocidolite (AKA blue asbestos), coloring it blue. Crocidolite gradually decomposes into yellowish limonite, taking tiger's-eye through green to golden-brown. From there it can be heated to turn limonite into reddish goethite. Whatever the mineral is, these fibrous inclusions catch the light as it moves across the surface of the stone, creating a natural cat's-eye effect.

What is obsidian?

Obsidian is volcanic glass that forms when lava cools too rapidly for individual minerals or elements to crystalize out. Usually black or dark grey, obsidian can also display clusters of white or light gray particles (snowflake obsidian), reddish-brown streaks (mahogany obsidian), microscopic bubbles that create a golden or silvery shimmer (sheen obsidian), colorful effects from mineral microparticles (rainbow, velvet, and fire obsidians), and more. Obsidian can be found at current or former volcanic sites worldwide.
