Beautiful, handmade black and white chessboard. Featuring 2" squares made from thermally modified oak and white maple, the corners of the squares are beveled for a premium look. The trim is made from 1.5" thick white maple, with a slight bevel on the top edge and two thin walnut inlays on the side.
What is "thermally modified" wood?
Some wood species can be baked at a specific temperature and duration to completely change the color of the wood. Red Oak is one of these species, and by going through this process, the color changes from a light pink color to an incredibly dark, rich, almost charcoal color. Using this process allows us to offer the deep color and contrast of black walnut with the unique grain and features of quarter-sawn oak, which is a highly sought-after wood which was used heavily in the Victorian era for it's beauty.

Ken has enjoyed woodworking since childhood and formed The Hickory Forge LLC in August 2019 in Indiana. Having studied and taught traditional Korean martial arts for many years, he started the business to make high-quality wooden martial arts weapons. During the pandemic, he expanded into custom hardwood furniture. Today, with local access to an internationally celebrated lumber mill specializing in quartersawn hardwoods and many exotic species, he can offer a large range of heirloom quality products at very competitive prices.
