Meet the Maker

Hey folks, and welcome to Beschol Bindery! I'm Anne, and I love making pretty and practical books.

I always have a hard time filling these sections out - it feels like bragging a little, and I was always taught that bragging was something that you Should Not Do.

For as long as I can remember, I've absolutely loved books. I was one of those kids that started reading early and as escapism, and my mother has commented for years that I would be wonderful as a librarian. I had one of those daydreams of running a small bookstore when I was younger. Life happened, of course, and that daydream never got realized. Then I fell into bookbinding as a hobby a few years back, and I absolutely loved it. I made books with whatever materials I had on hand, and then got a little fancier as I got deeper into the hobby. I made notebooks for myself that always got compliments when I used them at work, and then eventually made books for my friends as Christmas and birthday gifts.

That dream of a bookstore just showed up differently, and I'm proud to offer my books on this little corner of the internet. Thanks for stopping by!

How it’s Made

Materials: midweight linen, fusible interfacing, handmade cord, 68 lb (100 gsm) drawing paper

The signatures are attached to the cover using a variety of long stitch binding based on an extant historical book made with a parchment cover. After the paper was sewn to the covers, I went back over the longer exposed threads with a thinner and more decorative thread in a basic basketweave pattern - as mentioned above, this keeps the longer exposed threads from snagging on something as easily, and it adds a bit more textural (and colorful, in this case) interest.

The button loop is handmade of lengths of blue buttonhole twist and the same variegated blue thread used to weave around the longer spine cords. It was woven together by a historical technique known as fingerloop braiding - there are extant instructions from 15th to 17th century English texts, and the craft still survives in various areas of the world.

Shop Policies

Shipping

  • Processing Times: As noted on all of my listings, processing may take between one (1) to two (2) business days before the item is shipped. This ensures that you receive an item that is packed with care and that you're not having to pay extra for rushed pick ups by USPS.

  • Delivery: I prefer to use USPS Ground Advantage for general shipping. This is still the most inexpensive option available that comes with a tracking number. Said tracking number will be provided to you once your book has gone out for shipping. Please keep in mind that the estimated delivery time for USPS Ground Advantage shipping is between four (4) to six (6) days.

Returns and Exchanges

  • If you're not satisfied with your purchase, your item may be returned within thirty (30) days of delivery and either exchanged for another listed item of equal value or for a refund. In order to receive an exchange or refund, your item must be unused. If your book has been used and returned, you will not be eligible to receive an exchange or refund!

  • If you have not received your book after the advised time frame (4 - 6 days), please use the tracking number provided to confirm the location of your book with the United States Postal Service. If you have not received your book after twenty (20) days and there is no change to the status of your tracking number from USPS, please let me know. Your book will be considered "lost in the mail" at that point, and you may request a replacement of equal value from the listings available.

Cancellations

  • I cannot accept cancellations. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are purchasing the correct item in the correct size with the correct paper type.

Gift Wrapping and Packaging

  • Books with a spine width of more than one-half inch will be shipped in recycled cardboard boxes cut to the specific size of the book. This minimizes the amount of packaging that I need to budget for (which passes the savings on to you) and provides a more protective shell for your book.

  • Books less than one-half inch thick will have a custom protective case included with your purchase. These cases are made specifically for those books and are pictured in the item photographs.
