Meet the Maker
Hey there, my name is Kim. Thank you for finding me here on goimagine. If you have the time to read my little story, you will learn about myself and how I started in the handmade craft-seller world.
My "crafting" started many years ago when I was five, and I thought my Barbie needed new clothes. I would sit under our dining room table while my Mom was sewing. Scraps of fabric would fall on the floor and I would ask her, "Can I have this one"? She would either reply no, that piece is too big, or the exciting answer of yes! Of course, the sewing machine was off limits for me at that age, as well as my Mom's sewing scissors. I had to get creative with tying those fabric scraps around my doll's body. But that was part of the fun.
Moving forward several years, I took my first sewing class in school when I was twelve. Mrs. Robinson was my teacher and advised me that I had no business in a sewing class and could not sew! I remember clearly what the problems were. First, the bobbin was, first and foremost, the most confusing apparatus ever! Second, we were learning to sew on t-shirt knit fabric. Ugh! Then, there was the problem with the teacher, Mrs. Robinson, and her apparent dislike towards me. I couldn't ask her any more questions; she would kick me out of the class! I did not have a great experience in that class. I eventually told my mom about it, and she took matters into her own hands and taught me. I was off and running. The student surpassed the teacher, and I held my head high in that sewing class. Even with her accusations of "Your mother made this"! I would tell her that my mother taught me what she could not.
I continued taking sewing classes throughout my school days. Even sewing things for my teachers' personal use. After that blissful time in school and real life started, I discovered making other things with my sewing machine. Bunnies, Teddy Bears, Cows, Mice, even Elephants. People would buy them, and they would ask for special orders. I was shocked and thrilled. I eventually started selling my merchandise to a local upscale home decor store. Again, I was so happy. Then, I moved across the country; nobody knew me or anything about what I could do. I struggled with what to do myself and my crafting. Then, technology opened up a new adventure for me. I can sell again, online, to the whole world! "And we're off"! I am here, you are there, and the crafter and the buyer meet again.
P.S. I still hate bobbins.
