Koroit Opal comes from an opal mining area in South West Queensland, Australia. The Koroit opal field is known for the very distinctive type of Boulder Opal that is found in its mines. In Queensland Boulder Opal is found within a 300Â km wide belt of sedimentary rocks. Here opal is found as a kernel in small concretions. The Koroit Opal field was discovered in 1897 by Lawrence Rostron. The mining is done by either open cut large scale mining or by underground shafts.
Australian Boulder Opal is one of the most valuable varieties of opal, second only to Australia's black opal. Boulder opal can exhibit all of the spectral colors through their distinct play of color. Boulder opal is quite rare and accounts for only approximately 2% of all of Australia's opal. Boulder opal was first discovered in Quilpe, Western Australia, around the year 1870. Almost all boulder opal available today is from Western Queensland's opal-rich fields, confined to an area of about 200 to 300 square kilometers.
Boulder opal is found embedded in large boulders of ironstone, which is how it earned its name.
