About this Product

An amazing set of buckeye burl combined with chrome components to make a really nice fountain pen! I was fascinated by the detail in the wood on this piece. The coloring and eyes of the buckeye are just fabulous and make this pen a very unique and characterful piece. This pen is equipped with a medium nib and comes with a standard ink converter, upgraded Schmidt K5 ink converter, and an ink cartridge. Comfortable to hold and perfectly balanced, this small-to-mid-sized pen is a top choice for those with smaller hands while remaining comfortable in larger hands like mine. I like to turn these pens with a more generous curve since I think it helps the pen sit in the hand. On this pen, the curve is slight weighted toward the back of the pen, which makes it sit in my hand perfectly.

This is a one of a kind pen with very unique burl wood. The pen you receive will be the one pictured! One of my main gripes about selling online is that you can never really capture the character and feel of a handcrafted item through a series of pictures, no matter how many you take. To that end I do post videos of my work that help bridge that gap as much as possible on my Instagram. The video for this pen can be found here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DGJ0LXhNBzO/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

This pen will ship in a velvet box (see pictures) with the accessories noted above.

My goal is to ship all purchases as quickly as I can, however I do have a "day job" so can guarantee that I will ship absolutely no later than the next Friday/Saturday. As always, let me know if you are looking for custom work!

Meet the Maker

I started wood turning around 2010 when I discovered a love for lathes while working as a precision machinist. Since then lots has happened and while I haven't always been in a place where I could set up my lathe, I never considered leaving it behind. Now I'm thrilled to find myself in a place in life where I have dedicated shop/studio space and am taking full advantage. I've always enjoyed precision work and sometimes it's all I can do to remind myself that breaking out the micrometers isn't really necessary. I'm constantly looking for new ways to give my skills and challenging myself with new techniques and projects. Thanks for checking out my work and feel free to contact me if there's anything you're looking for but don't see.

How it’s Made

To make this pen I hand selected wood blanks from my stock of waste wood blanks. I am always on the lookout for materials that are considered seconds or waste since one of my goals is to reduce waste as much as possible. Usually the wood that's set to be discarded is still very usable, as was the case here! I turn these higher end pens one at a time to make sure I am giving them my full attention. I size and drill the wood blanks for the body and cap, and then use a high grade CA glue to install the brass tubes. From there I carefully square the ends of the blanks to the axis of the tubes, and seal them with an extra thin CA glue. This extra sealing step ensures that the end grain of the wood will be hardened and provide a nice clean surface to mate with the other components. Then I turn one piece at a time on my benchtop lathe and sand them smooth. I use high-grade CA glue to seal and finish the finished cap and body, applying at least 8 coats. Then I go through a 9 step polishing process to get the finish as smooth and shiny as possible. Using a CA finish this way makes all the little details of the wood pop and provides a very durable and water resistant finish. After I seal, finish, and polish, I assemble each pen carefully, taking time to look at each part and make sure that they all install correctly. If I find any problems, I stop and either remake or replace the part, ensuring that the final product is the highest quality I can provide!
