Meet the Maker

My felt food obsession happened "by accident" when my granddaughters were quite young. My youngest daughter emailed me a picture of the play kitchen her girls were getting for Christmas. The picture showed kids playing with some sort of "fake" food--I got to browsing and ran across all sorts of tutorials for DIY felt food. I made a few pieces from the tutorials and patterns others had designed but never being content with anything "ready made"--patterns or anything else I could possibly make myself, I started designing my own felt food. It proved to be addicting and I showed my creations to anyone who would stand still long enough to look. One day my brother saw what I had made and asked where I was selling them. "Selling them...? I'm not selling them..." He replied, "Well, you should". So I poked around, found a venue and the TreehouseToyShop was born. I started getting a lot of requests for patterns for my felt food and it seemed logical to open a dedicated pattern shop and now here we are...TreehousePatterns! Look around, ask questions, leave suggestions and comments and maybe pick up a pattern or two. I hope you'll be a regular here! :-D Plans are in the works to reopen the TreehouseToyShop, with finished, ready-to-ship felt food! Occasionally I do custom orders for the finished items now, so if you're looking for that service, or for felt food I don't currently offer, let me know...we may be able to work something out!

How it’s Made

Each Treehouse Patterns design is first sketched out by hand and then digitized to produce clear, professional looking templates. They're then tested in acrylic felt to ensure all the components fit together as intended. Adjustments are made to the pattern as needed and then tested in acrylic felt once again. Once I'm happy with the final result, a complete prototype is made to be absolutely sure the entire pattern works together and that I haven't missed anything. Then I proceed to making the final version out of the intended materials--wool blend felt. My work doesn't end there. The step-by-step photos must be edited for clarity, the "Beauty Shot" for the cover must be taken and the instructions written up and proofread. Only when I'm convinced that my creation is as perfect as I can possibly make it, do I publish it. A lot of time and effort goes into each step along the way, to make sure the final product is an easy to understand, easy to make pattern. Sometimes the acrylic prototypes are sold at a discount, either here in my pattern shop or in my toy shop. The final set, used in the beauty shot, is also sold in one of my shops, at full price. If you're interested in finished items, watch for the prototype to go on sale shortly after the pattern is released. Or, if you prefer, you can contact me for a finished item price and I can set up a special listing for you. Finished items can take 3-6 weeks to make, depending on my current workload.
