About this Product

This malachite has beautiful chatoyance: the property of some minerals to exhibit a wavy, luminous band with a silky luster, reminiscent of the eye of a cat, in the center of a cabochon-cut (polished, with a rounded, unfaceted convex surface) stone.

Chatoyant malachite, a captivating variation of the mineral malachite, is renowned for its unique optical phenomenon that resembles the eye of a cat.

Chatoyant malachite, a captivating variation of the mineral malachite, is renowned for its unique optical phenomenon that resembles the eye of a cat. This mesmerizing effect, known as chatoyancy, is caused by the fibrous or band-like structure of the mineral, which reflects light in a way that creates a shimmering and moving line across the surface.

Malachite, including its chatoyant variety, forms through the secondary copper mineralization process. It typically occurs in the oxidized zones of copper ore deposits, where copper-rich solutions interact with limestone or other carbonate rocks. Over time, these interactions give rise to the formation of malachite, characterized by its vibrant green color and distinctive banding or fibrous patterns.

The history of malachite dates back thousands of years, with its use in ornamental and decorative purposes traced to ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. It was highly prized for its vivid green color, which symbolized life, fertility, and rebirth. Malachite was often used in jewelry, amulets, and ceremonial objects, and it adorned the walls of palaces and temples.

The name "malachite" is derived from the Greek word "malache," meaning "mallow," due to its resemblance to the leaves of the mallow plant. This name reflects its vibrant green color and the organic connection ancient observers noticed in its appearance.

I wrapped the stone in sterling silver wires and added a 20" stainless steel chain. This pendant is 2 inches long and 3/4 inch wide.

Care Instructions:

I do not apply sealers because they wear off and the silver will continue to patina over time anyway.  If you would like to keep it the way it is, a polishing cloth will help you accomplish this.  Do not use any metal cleaner on it could damage the stone.  Do not wear while swimming or showering as the water will cause it to patina quicker and could also cause the copper to turn green in the tighter woven areas.  When not being worn, you should keep it in the zip bag it comes in.

About the stone:

Since stones are made by nature, they may have some "natural" imperfections.  Some stones have naturally occurring pits, holes and pockets that may contain small crystals.  Those pockets are called druzies.   Some may also contain naturally occurring cracks and some have healed fractures.  Healed fractures are when the stone broke at one point and new material filled in the crack. You can still see the crack, but it is no longer broken.  Other stones like Labradorite and Moonstone have what are called cleavages.  It's the crystal structure you see, but doesn't mean the stone is broken.  These types of stones are more fragile and if dropped, could break where you see the cleavages.  While most stones have a natural shine when polished, some of the softer stones do not.  These stones are polished to a point and then a sealer is applied to make it shine.  For this reason, pendants should never be cleaned with a chemical cleaner as this could dissolve the sealer and you would be left with a dull looking stone.

Meet the Maker

I am Janice Pooley, the owner of JPoolJewelry.

I began making jewelry because I wanted to make my own rings through metal smithing but stumbled across a flame free way of creating jewelry by wire wrapping.

I love the versatility in wrapping stones, it can be simple or created with great detail. I started out making wire jewelry with craft wire because it was more affordable at the time but I have since switched to copper wire, sterling silver and silver filled wires because I wanted to make pieces that would last and be passed on to others.

I have been a rock collector all my life. I was always picking up a rock or stone because I thought it was pretty. My mother often had to check my pockets before washing my clothes because I usually had a few in there.

I love that God created so much beauty everywhere, even in rocks.

The art of wire wrapping allows me to make it wearable.
