How it’s Made
I learned how to make beaded necklaces and beaded daisies from two other indigenous artists when I was in school. Mary and her mother were kind enough to share their materials, time, and knowledge of how to create beautiful necklaces that last.
When I tried at first to bead using regular thread and my thinnest sewing needle, my pieces would break and the beads would get stuck on my needle as I tried to string them. And you can't force it- those little seed beads break if you're too rough with them (just like the best of us).
And even as a beader with technique and practice, sometimes thread gets snarled in a way you can't undo - and a whole piece needs to be cut up and begun anew.
The citrus tree necklace was made with the oranges as a start - my friend Angel (another indigenous artist) showed me these beads she'd made and I was put to the task of making something that complemented and suited their simple beauty. So, I thought of the trees that grow perfect, delicious oranges for us and decided to bring a little of that to these lampworked beauties.
