About this Product

“Coati of Many Colors”

This dramatic masquerade mask was inspired by the Coatimundi, a southwestern cousin to the racoon.  Coatimundis are social creatures and the females and young travel in groups.  They have long snouts with flexible noses used for foraging.  The coati’s long tail is often straight up and helps them keep their balance while climbing.

This mask is a collaborative effort with James Goodin.  The coatimundi mask is embroidered to look like a patchwork of fabric, in a salute to the Dolly Parton song “Coat of Many Colors.”  The flowery tail is created by James Goodin (freespiritoriginals.com) and can easily be removed and secured on either side of the mask or used separately as a scarf or fashion accessory. The “Coati of Many Colors” mask and tail would be a stunning display on a wall, as well as the perfect accessory for a masquerade ball, a renaissance fair, or any costumed convention!

Each mask is made individually with some variations on the colors.  The pictures shown are for example.  The mask will be made when the order is placed. This design can be customized with changes in the colors, please send me a message to let me know your ideas!

The dimensions are approximately 8 inches wide and 8.5 inches high to the tips of the ears, and 4.5 inches forward to the tip of the nose.  The tail is 48 inches long!  The mask and tail only weigh 5.7 ounces (the shipping weight includes the box and packing materials).

I do my best to keep the pictures accurate, but the colors may not be exactly as shown on the webpage.

Meet the Maker

Thank you for visiting my shop.  I’m Jane Madsen and I live in beautiful Why, AZ, a very small town in southern Arizona in the Sonoran Desert.  I’ve always loved drawing animals, and I discovered the art of creating machine embroidery designs during the pandemic.  For me, it is the perfect intersection of art, sewing and computer skills.  I tried to think of an idea for a new product line that would be fun, unique, and artistic, and decided to create a series of masks.  Masquerade style masks can be used for many events and parties and can also be displayed as an artistic accent.  The animals and cacti of the Sonoran Desert are my inspiration for masks that are unlike any other.

I work from home in my little patch of desert, surrounded by saguaros, barrel cactus and cholla cactus.  I often see roadrunners, quails, red tailed hawks, turkey vultures, lizards, cottontail bunnies and jackrabbits, along with the occasional rattlesnake.  The desert is beautiful to look at and is delicate and dangerous at the same time. My home is smoke-free and dog-friendly.

How it’s Made

This mask is machine embroidered from a design that I created.  The embroidered pieces are machine stitched together with hand stitching to detail the ears and nose.  The ribbons have a drawstring type catch to make it easy to put on and remove.  The mask is lined with a soft and lightweight fabric.  The tail is made with flowers that were individually crocheted and set on a handmade macrame cord and has enough body to hold curved shapes.

The initial digital design process takes quite some time, with many tests on the stitches, the color combinations and the structure of the masks.  Once the design is finalized, stitching out the masquerade masks on the embroidery machine will take from six to ten hours, then the components are put together with a combination of a sewing machine and hand stitching.
