About this Product

This handwoven wall hanging measures 26 inches wide and 23 inches long, not counting the fringe or the dowel. Created from a variety of yarns, the palate moves from light to dark and includes spring green, yellows, oranges, reds, and purples. The black, gray, and white warp provide an interesting background that allows the colors to shine. The last two photos are taken against a window, and you can see how the light filters through the various textures.

It's All About Color And Texture

I have been fortunate to have spent more than a decade studying Saori weaving in Worcester, Massachusetts, where the first Saori studio in the United States is located. When I began studying creative, freestyle weaving, I found it to be the expressive outlet I had long been seeking. The Saori belief that “people are not machines,” and the idea that every piece must be an original work of art is why this philosophy speaks to me. Pieces evolve as they are woven, allowing the fibers and the artist's eye to meld into one as the item takes shape. Colors, textures, and the environment all work together to create a piece of art that is truly unique.

When I am not at home in Worcester, I live in Deer Isle, Maine. Here, the rugged coast presents new colors and textures to work with, and whenever possible, I try to include them in my work. Lichens, shells, mosses, and driftwood often find their way into my weavings, even if they only poke their heads in here and there.

Recently I began spinning my own yarn, which has allowed me to add interesting art yarn into my work. These one-of-a-kind yarns lend themselves beautifully to the Saori philosophy and also allow me to better utilize leftover bits, thus leaving a better footprint upon our planet

How it’s Made

I weave every piece by hand on either a four-harness or a frame loom, utilizing a variety of fibers, colors, and textures. This assures that each of my weavings is truly a one-of-a-kind item. Because no patterns are used, no piece can ever be duplicated. Once I select my fibers, I design each piece as I weave, letting the interplay of colors and textures determine how the work will evolve.

I can create made-to-order pieces in sizes and colors that will fit your decor; please call, text, or email me to request a special order.
