About this Product

This adorable little corgi is just so happy to see you that he can't help but smile! He is sculpted out of polymer clay, painted with acrylic paint, and sealed with a matte varnish to protect him and his paint from damage and erosion. He stands at about 1 3/4" tall and 2 1/4" long.

This corgi (along with everything else in my shop!) is 100% handmade. He was handsculpted, painted, and varnished. As such, some imperfections attributed to handmade items can be expected - and that's part of the point! Even if I make another corgi, there will never be another exactly like this one.

How it’s Made

I begin my process of sculpting models with a good deal of research, then move on to the framework of the model. The skeleton is made out of wire of an appropriate gauge for the size and weight of the subject matter, and aluminum foil is used around that skeleton to provide substance. It is a common technique to use aluminum foil in this manner, as it decreases the weight of the piece, decreases the chance of the model cracking during baking/firing, and increases the chances of the model withstanding drops without damage. Next I add the clay and use a variety of tools, techniques, and skills to sculpt the model into the desired shapes. If the model has any small pieces (teeth, claws, and the like), I sculpt and bake those before the model so that I can add them to the model without ruining the small pieces. Once I am satisfied with the overall form, I paint the backs of the cabochon eyes (if applicable) and/or create any accessories needed for the model, add those to the model, and then move to the next stage. I give myself about 24 hours after this to regularly look at and evaluate the model, make small adjustments where needed, and overall be certain that I am happy with the design. Once I am certain, I then use 90% isopropyl alcohol and a brush to wipe down my model and remove any fingerprints or tooling marks. Following that, I add texture (like fur, fabric, scales, etc.) and then bake/fire the model. Once the model is set, I let it cool before making sure that no cracks, breaks, or other undesirable changes occurred during baking/firing. Should there be any issues from baking/firing, they can then be fixed with a variety of methods, depending on the issue. From there, I hand-sand the entire model until I am satisfied with the overall shape. I don't go for perfection, as I don't want to lose the texture(s) I imparted earlier. I then prime the model with one or two coats of white gesso, paint the piece, and spend the next day or two painting and adjusting the colors until I am happy with it. Once I am happy, I then let it dry, and finally I can put on the finishing touches: two-to-three coats of matte or gloss varnish hand-painted on, UV resin added to the eyes to make them shine and to protect the glass, a base (if applicable), and any other small details that I believe will add to the piece. Finally, I take lots of pictures and create my listing on GoImagine!
