Meet the Maker

Welcome, my name is Lyn (short for Lynda) and I live in the beautiful Green Mountain State of Vermont. I have always been interested in the visual arts dabbling in decorative painting,  stenciling, beadwork ... and then I discovered polymer clay. It is so much fun to work with. I decided to open this shop to make beautiful earrings for you and bring you along on the journey of how I use various techniques to create unique designs. In addition, I will be donating 15% of the sale of each pair of earrings to "Save the Children" hence the shop name "Clay Relief" (I believe in paying it forward).

Enjoy exploring my shop, I look forward to helping you build your earring wardrobe and helping children in need at the same time.

How it’s Made

I carefully make each pair of earrings with this step by step plan to ensure you receive beautiful handcrafted earrings.

  • For this set, I began with a slab of gold metallic clay about 4"x6" that is run through my pasta machine until it is well conditioned.

  • Using gold clay I make a mica shift pattern.

  • Clay cutters are used to cut out the shapes.

  • The pieces are then baked in my toaster oven on a low heat for I hour to ensure the clay is well cured.

  • When completely cooled, I go through 5-6 grits of sandpaper to make each piece silky smooth.

  • The next step is to give each piece a nice buffing to bring out a satin finish.

  • The final step is to assemble the pieces and place them on a tag.

  • Now they are ready to ship and for you to enjoy.

Brief Explanation of Mica Shift

The clay must be metallic or pearlized as they have tiny mica particles in them. When the particles are not going in the same direction the clay has light and dark coloring. To do a shift, the clay must be run through a pasta machine several times to ensure all the mica particles are going in the same direction. The clay will be smooth and one solid color. Now the fun part, using any kind of texture sheet, lets say a grid pattern, run the clay and the sheet through the pasta machine together. The clay will now have a ghosting effect where the particles have shifted so the grid pattern appears on the clay. There are endless possibilities for this effect.
