This DIY fully illustrated sewing tutorial is simple and easy to follow. It yields a 24-inch diameter playmat, which can easily hold a 100-piece, 4-foot-long Melissa & Doug floor puzzle. Conveniently store building blocks, Legos, art supplies, balls, puzzles, magnet tiles, stuffed animals, dolls, dress-up clothes, a picnic lunch, and more!
Don't make just one! These playmats are perfect for playdates, hotel stays, beach trips, visits to grandparents, sleepovers, and camping trips. They also make awesome gift bags (alone or stuffed with fun toys/items)! When pulled into a bag, the playmat is a great storage solution for small spaces.
***This tutorial does not include a printable circle pattern as the cutting and pasting would be exhaustive. This tutorial DOES include detailed written instructions with color illustrations for each step.***
How to Make a Large Circle?
I know this may be an obvious (and silly) question but when I first attempted this project, my mind struggled to lock onto anything in my home that I could use as a template. After hunting around for several minutes, I spotted a few items that worked…
- a child-sized table (flipped upside down);
- a clean garbage can lid;
- a bicycle tire;
- a laundry basket;
- my neighbor’s hula hoop :);
- a pizza pan.
Of course, you can freehand the circle. Keep in mind the larger the circle the more materials you’ll need. I recommend at least 3 yards of bias tape. I had nearly ¾- yards left over after making this 24-inch bag.
Enjoy! You are only limited by your imagination :)!
