About this Product
Beautiful handmade oyster shell wall clock featuring a dozen Pacific oyster shells set like the hours around an orange dinner plate, the color of a 1970's VW beetle. The plate bottom is circled with a mosaic of amber sea glass and pieces of shells (mussel, abalone, and mother of pearl), honed down and polished by the waves. The 12 o'clock hour is embellished with a real 7mm pearl.
Each hand-selected 2 1/2 to 3 inch oyster shell gets ground down on the back to make it sit properly on the plate, the hinge is then touched up with black and brown paint, and finally the shell is painted with a glossy sealer to enhance the shell's colorful nacre interior which gives it a fresh-shucked wet look.
So fresh looking you can almost taste the cool salty oysters when you check the time! Perfect for any wedding, housewarming, or seasonal gift for the oyster-obsessed friend or family member.
The American made quartz clock movement requires 1 AA battery. The clock comes ready to hang with a hook on the back or it can be displayed on a plate stand. Clock diameter is 10 3/4 inches.
ART ON THE HALF-SHELL Artfully coastal timepieces for the oyster and seafood connoisseur and coastal lifestyle enthusiast.

How it’s Made
All of my pieces are one a kind, made by me. I have a collection of plates and platters from area home decor stores and secondhand shops. The oyster shells come from restaurants in my area, Pacific Grove and Monterey CA, trips to my hometown of New Orleans, LA, and an oyster bar in Denver where I have family. A "smelly" flat rate box of oyster shells is not an uncommon sight on my front porch. After choosing a plate and drilling a hole in it for the clock mechanism, I select the oyster shells and grind them down on the back to sit properly on the plate. The shell hinge often needs to be touched up with acrylic paint because it gets broken when shucked. Once glued into position, the shells are sealed with either a semigloss acrylic sealer or a high gloss resin sealer, depending on the look I am going for. The mosaic ring, set like the minutes of a clock, is made with real sea glass, shell pieces and/or tumbled beach glass. And as a final touch, a single real pearl adorns the 12 o'clock shell. Due to drying and curing times, each clock takes several days to make.
