About this Product
The softer side of a spooky story of split personality - Dr. Jekyll and Mrs. Hyde. The clasped weft technique employed subtly illustrates the tension of the professional appearance of the doctor against the angst of Mrs. Hyde when away from her professional station in life.
The finished shawl measures 23 inches by 68 inches not including 8 inches of twisted fringe. The yarn used truly is a mystery, eight unused skeins with no labels.
Lyon Handwovens
Meet the Maker
Lyon Handwovens is a fusion of my early love of all things textile, a two decade career in environmental consulting, followed by another decade in quality. This fusion has resulted in narrowing my focus in weaving to using sustainable yarns (wool, cotton, silk) up-cycled materials (VHS tape, commercial carpet yarn, plastic shopping bags) and repurposed fabrics (dead stock and remnants from professional decorators, estate sales, thrift shops). Sustainability, like most things is not static and this journey I'm on will require ongoing adjustments, new paths and learning from others. I hope you'll check in periodically to see how my journey is progressing.
How it’s Made
For this shawl I used the clasped weft technique on my larger rigid heddle loom. There are multiple ways to design a project using this technique, from very geometric designs mimicking piano keys or skylines, to using three colors in the weft or just one color in the warp.
This particular design was based on the challenge to create an item based on a trending palette of a pastel Halloween, instead of the traditional orange and black. Ghosts, goblins and jack-o-lanterns are not easy to replicate on a loom, so after much thought and a close inspection of my yarn stash I settled on a large quantity of muted gray and pink mystery yarns picked up at one of my favorite non-profit textile resale shops. I decided on clasped weft, imagining the tension of the two personalities in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella being depicted by the clashing of the two in the back and forth erratic pattern of the two weft colors.
