ENGLISH STYLE LEADED GLASS MACKINTOSH ROASE PANEL

Inspired by windows seen in my trips to England, this panel has been constructed to resemble panels build by British glassiers of the late 19th and early 20th century. The panel features a rose in deep red glass, a design element made famous by Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

A crown of rich green leaves surrounds the top of the rose and framed by an arch of clear dew drop glass. The arch pops with sparkling light, breaking up the background of clear double rolled glass. This panel is constructed using traditional lead came and mortar, creating a strong and sturdy window pane, like those used to adorn so many homes throughout the United Kingdom.

Thick zinc came is used to frame out the panel, giving you the flexibility to instal in to a window or simply hang as a decorative accent. The sturdy zinc frame and all solder elements have been treated with a dark patina to give a well aged look, protected with Carnauba wax and buffed to a high polished shine. Sturdy rings are located on the corners panel for hanging.

Approximately 14.75 x 4 inch rectangle.

Shipped insured and double boxed and marked fragile.

Meet the Maker

Photographer, graphic artist, web developer and tech professional turned stained glass artist and following his dreams.

After decades within with digital media I found myself compelled to create something that was real, something that would last.  This lead me to walk into my first stained glass shop….my world would never be the same.

This journey of eduction in my craft has been an amazing one with tips from online communities and guidance from local glass artists with decades of experience.  The joy of this craft is only outshone by the glee of someone purchasing my work and hearing the stories of how that work brought joy others.

It is often said that you have to give something away in order to keep it.  This is why I am proud to be part of goimagine.com and their commitment to helping children, giving the next generation the opportunity to follow their dreams too.

How it’s Made

My process begins with a line drawing where each line is purpose built; to render the form while structurally supporting the image it creates.  Once the design is finalized, the right method of contraction is chosen. This panel uses the “Leaded Glass” technique, a classical process used for centuries you have likely seen in countless churches and public building.

Selection of the right glass is performed, taking into account the opacity, colors & textures best suited for the design.  Next I meticulous score, break and refine each glass element to the exact shape needed. These elements are inspected to assure accuracy then seated into an ”h” shaped piece of stretched lead.

Cement, whitening and linseed oil is carefully mixed then pushed between the gaps where the glass and lead came.  This mix is then left to set for several days.  This bond gives the panel great strength and when properly maintained, will allow the panel to last for decades.   After scrubbing and removing excess cement, Carnauba wax that is applied and buffed many times over until to a high polished shine is attained.
