About this Product
Every element of this pen has been shaped by hand, with care and precision that no machine can replicate. The body begins with three layers of birdseye maple veneer, each one carefully cut, segmented, and aligned so the grain patterns flow seamlessly. Once pressed and bonded, the blank is mounted on the lathe, where it is turned to a refined profile.
Through careful sanding and multiple stages of polishing, the wood is brought to a glass-like finish that highlights the natural figure of birdseye maple — tiny, shimmering “eyes” that catch the light from every angle. The final step is assembly, where craftsmanship meets engineering: the pen is fitted with the Schmidt SKM-88 all-metal German click mechanism, renowned for its smooth, crisp action and long-lasting reliability.
The result is not just a writing tool, but a one-of-a-kind piece of functional art:
Woodwork: Segmented, hand-turned birdseye maple veneer
Crafting Process: Cut, segmented, bonded, lathe-turned, hand-polished finish
Mechanism: Schmidt SKM-88 German precision click assembly
Ink: Standard Parker-style ballpoint refill, easily replaceable
Feel: Balanced weight, smooth click, silky writing experience
Uniqueness: Each segmentation and grain pattern is completely unique
This pen represents hours of labor and decades of woodworking tradition, captured in a writing instrument meant to be used every day — or gifted as an heirloom.

Meet the Maker
Hi, I’m Chad—the craftsman behind every piece at StoneWood Designs.
I’ve been a woodworker for as long as I can remember. Whether building something practical or designing something purely for beauty, I’ve always found joy in shaping raw materials into lasting, meaningful objects. In recent years, that passion led me to the lathe—where form, texture, and purpose come together in a way that’s both meditative and endlessly creative.
From pens and bowls to holiday décor, kitchen tools, and desk accessories, everything I make starts with one thing: exceptional material. Living in Las Vegas means I have to work hard to source great wood—but I see that as a feature, not a bug. I spend hours tracking down the right pieces, often working with other small makers across the country to find sustainable, unique woods and hybrid materials. I pride myself on pairing each one perfectly with its hardware, so the design feels complete—intentional from start to finish.
If I had to sum up what I hope you feel when you see or hold one of my pieces? Evocative. Whether it’s a pen that reminds you of the ocean or a bowl that feels rooted in tradition, I want it to spark something. A memory. A mood. A sense of connection.
Supporting handmade work keeps these skills alive—and keeps small makers thriving. I’m proud to be part of that, and I’m grateful you’re here.

How it’s Made
Each pen begins as thin sheets of birdseye maple veneer, which are carefully cut, segmented, and bonded into a layered blank. After curing, the blank is mounted on the lathe, turned to shape, and meticulously sanded through multiple grits. A polished finish is built up by hand to reveal the wood’s natural brilliance before the pen is fitted with its German-made Schmidt mechanism. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece of functional art — made to be held, used, and admired.
