Meet the Maker

Hello and welcome to my shop!

My name is Marc, and I am the founder, owner, and sole maker at Floating Feather Books & Stationery. As a former English professor, I am passionate about reading, writing, and the creativity they inspire. I first fell in love with bookbinding over a decade ago as an English undergraduate. Since then, I've been making books and experimenting with paper arts any chance I get. All the marbled paper used in my books is handmade, meaning each sheet is unique. My books and paper products are entirely handmade and are designed to spark your creativity. Whether you are looking for a new journal to start your writing your novel in, a sketchbook to unleash your creativity in, or some handmade cards and stationery to help you reconnect with friends and loved ones, Floating Feather Books & Stationery has something for you. I hope you enjoy using my books and paper products as much as I enjoy making them!

How it’s Made

This journal began with the marbled paper. I marbled the paper using a carrageenan size and acrylic paints. Once the papers were dried and pressed, I coated them with a satin varnish to help protect them. Next, I printed the lined pages and folded them into signatures using a bone folder to get nice, tight creases. From there, I planned out the spacing for the sewing sections to achieve the pattern on the spine.

After the design was complete, I covered binders board with the varnished, marbled papers and glued it all together with a piece of purple book cloth. Next, I measured and punched the sewing sections in the signatures and the spine using an awl. Finally, after all these steps, I was ready to tack on the end pages and sew the book together using high quality, waxed linen thread.
