Hi, I’m Chad—the craftsman behind every piece at StoneWood Designs.
I’ve been a woodworker for as long as I can remember. Whether building something practical or designing something purely for beauty, I’ve always found joy in shaping raw materials into lasting, meaningful objects. In recent years, that passion led me to the lathe—where form, texture, and purpose come together in a way that’s both meditative and endlessly creative.
From pens and bowls to holiday décor, kitchen tools, and desk accessories, everything I make starts with one thing: exceptional material. Living in Las Vegas means I have to work hard to source great wood—but I see that as a feature, not a bug. I spend hours tracking down the right pieces, often working with other small makers across the country to find sustainable, unique woods and hybrid materials. I pride myself on pairing each one perfectly with its hardware, so the design feels complete—intentional from start to finish.
If I had to sum up what I hope you feel when you see or hold one of my pieces? Evocative. Whether it’s a pen that reminds you of the ocean or a bowl that feels rooted in tradition, I want it to spark something. A memory. A mood. A sense of connection.

How it’s Made
This pen begins as a block of stabilized Flaming Box Elder—also known as Manitoba Maple—chosen for its vivid, naturally occurring flame-like streaks. The wood is hand-turned on a lathe to achieve a smooth, contoured shape, then meticulously sanded through multiple grits and polished to a high-gloss finish.
To create the bold black accent lines, grooves are first cut with a fine detailing tool, then a wire is carefully pressed into each groove while the lathe spins at 3,500 RPM. This controlled burn technique creates deep, permanent black rings—adding a custom detail that’s both visual and tactile. It’s a delicate process that takes precision and timing… and occasionally risks starting a small fire.
The pen is then assembled with premium gunmetal hardware and paired with a gift pouch.
