About this Product
Inspired by the dainty and whimsical characteristics of a certain animated princess with extremely long blonde tresses and a pretty purple gown, this necklace pays homage to a few of her bright and happy characteristics. Always having been a fan of the happily-ever-after genre, I had an idea to bring to life something that could mean as much to someone else as these movies have to me. Each bloom and bead was meticulously chosen to reflect the hues of said princess's attire and the little flowers nestled in her braids during my favorite part of the movie. Thus, a tribute to love and fantasy emerged, as this necklace invites wearers to infuse their own fairy tale with a touch of princess-inspired charm.
The construction of this necklace is a testament to the ability to bring an idea to life only using the pieces you have on hand. Broken brooches have a new life in the flowers and leaves emerging from the sides of the bib of the necklace. The purple and orange flower earrings became what they are to bring to life some of the visible characteristics. They were hand-painted those specific colors and clear rivolis were added for a touch of sparkle at their core. The tiny blue and purple roses were devoid of any attachments whatsoever. I'm not sure if they were ever part of a piece of jewelry at one point, but they became part of this one! Even the white floral clusters were once earrings, but one of them was missing the clip so I removed the other one and they were added to the ensemble. The bronze filigree pieces of the backing of the necklace and the bronze leafy dangle were lovingly hand-painted in soft metallic gold, to soften the harsh bronze and blend in with the warmer yellow hues. The strands of beads that hang around the neck are braided like our princess's hair, with pops of purple and green entwined with pale yellow and an antique gold chain. The chain and the clasp, the latter of which is stamped with "Monet" on the back, were also taken from dismantled vintage pieces of jewelry to add beautiful design and trustworthy stability. The earrings are constructed in the same way, with hand-painted flowers attached to a gold-painted filigree backing and purple and green beads dangling from the bottom, intentionally bringing out specific color characteristics. Truly, in every detail, this became a labor of love, inviting all who behold it to immerse themselves in the magic of fairy-tale romance.
The earrings are 3.75" long from the top of the earring hook and about 1.25" wide. They also come with earring backs.
Hand-painted elements have been sealed.
All components are nickel-free.
All of the flower components are vintage earrings and brooches that were broken or missing their partners. The clasp and chain were from previously deconstructed jewelry pieces and repurposed for this piece.
The necklace is about 21" long.
The Mystic Victorian
Meet the Maker
Hi! My name is Jessica. I am the owner/designer/maker/shipper/accountant/social media "guru"/photographer of The Mystic Victorian. I hope I can help adorn and empower you today!
I used to dabble in jewelry-making when I was doing that 9-5 life that always seemed to be at minimum 7a-10p. I started a different version of my shop about 10 years ago. I couldn't think of a great name and I was torn on what to make. I always got told "That's too fancy" or "Why don't you go in this direction" and I felt a little confused. I seemed to always let people lead me to what was popular or what they liked and it never felt like it was from me. About a year ago, I rebranded to The Mystic Victorian and I told myself, I'm going to make what I've always wanted to make! Whenever I've put on jewelry, it's never crossed my mind if it was "too fancy." If it matched crossed my mind, of course, and if it made me feel good. A great necklace has always made me feel empowered to be the me I want to be. So now, I feel fantastic about my new name, the style and look of the pieces I put out, and the overall feeling of doing things on my own terms!
My handmade jewelry and baubles that I sell, stem from my favorite things and my favorite styles. I LOVE old things! I am an old soul indeed. I would say I was born in the wrong time, but I'm a pretty big feminist so I don't think I would've made it in an older time! I love scrollwork on anything, old houses, furniture, old books (and new!), flashy jewelry from kings and queens of the past, big dresses, pocketwatches...I could go on and on. But I also love quiet things, like the rain, the beach, and a nice library visit. I get inspired by nature a lot. A good sunset goes a long way! All of this tends to somehow come together in what I make.
I am married and a mom of two little boys and a doggie. I used to work retail for about 15 years, give or take. I've done restaurant jobs, cashiering jobs, and managerial jobs. My favorite and longest job I had was as a frame shop manager in a craft store. We had so many cool art pieces, and very weird, come in to be framed, and it was one of the biggest joys to make something out of the box where I could be creative with the design and emphasize the beautiful colors or importance of the piece before me. I have that same joy when I can bring an idea to life and make it work the way I wanted it to. Even a strung beaded necklace is given so much more thought than just stringing a pre-set combination of beads onto a different thread. I always create my own combinations and match colors to emphasize each other and exude as much beauty as I can bring out. That is what makes the wearer feel fantastic, is when you can feel that when you put it on. There's power in not being afraid to wear what you love!
How it’s Made
I had a whole bunch of vintage earrings and brooches that were mismatched and broken, and even a bunch that were still paired up and intact. I went through the lot of them and found ones that were close enough to pair up or small enough to fit on my filigree pieces used for the backing. Once I found the ones I wanted, I went to work figuring out placement and how they were going to be attached to the filigree. That was probably the most tricky part! Before placing them permanently, I decided to incorporate some of the popular colors from the movie inspiration I had, so I painted a handful of the flowers and all of the bronze components to be more visually appealing. Some parts had loops to use jump rings to attach to the back, but some I had to glue because they were completely missing pins or earring clips or posts or one was broken off or even some of them were in the way of laying down flat, so I adjusted as needed.
Once the bib portion was sorted out, I completed the strands of beads that I braided up the neck. Again, I picked out colors that incorporated the most visually recognizable attributes and represented them with purple and pale yellow glass pearls, green sparkly glass beads, and deep purple bicones. The chain and clasp were parts of other jewelry pieces I had already dismantled. The clasp has a Monet stamp on the back, which is vintage and very good quality, and the chain had an antique color and a braided look that further emphasized the look I was trying to achieve. The earrings were constructed with the same philosophy and color choices.
