How it’s Made

Our Freeze-dried Astro Poppers are made through a process called freeze-drying, which preserves the fruit flavor and texture while removing moisture. Here’s a simplified overview of how it's done:

1. Preparation: Skittles candies are prepared by sorting and cleaning to ensure only good quality candies are used.

2. Freezing: The Skittles are quickly frozen to a very low temperature. This freezing step is crucial because it prepares the candies for the next phase of freeze-drying.

3. Vacuum Chamber: The frozen Skittles are placed into a vacuum chamber. In this chamber, the air pressure is lowered significantly, and the temperature is raised slightly.

4. Sublimation: During freeze-drying, the ice (frozen water) inside the Skittles transitions directly from a solid to a gas without passing through the liquid phase. This process is called sublimation. The vacuum environment allows the ice to evaporate without causing the Skittles to melt or lose their shape.

5. Drying: As the ice sublimates, it leaves behind the structure of the Skittle intact but without the moisture. This results in a crunchy, crispy texture while retaining the original flavor of the candy.

6. Packaging: Once freeze-dried, the Skittles are packaged to protect them from moisture and maintain their crisp texture.

The freeze-drying process is favored for preserving the shape, flavor, and nutritional value of foods compared to traditional drying methods that might involve heat, which enhances the sweet candy flavor
