About this Product
This small to medium sized shoulder bag or crossbody purse showcases a piece of my hand-weaving on the back and front flap, including 8-1/2 inches of hand twisted fringe.
This unique piece measures approximately 8-inches wide and 12-inches long. It is completely lined and includes an interior pocket large enough to accommodate most small tablets or large cell phones.
Finished with brass hardware and 1-inch wide, dark coffee colored nylon strapping this bag is ready for your next adventure whether that’s to the local coffee shop or flying to a far off destination. The strap can be adjusted from 27-inches to 54-inches to allow you to wear it comfortably as a shoulder or crossbody bag.
The woven piece is firmly held in place with black fusible interfacing to prevent snagging of the weave during use. Spot cleaning is recommended; however if washing becomes necessary either hand wash in lukewarm water or place in a net lingerie bag to prevent the fringe from tangling. Air dry.
Lyon Handwovens
Meet the Maker
Lyon Handwovens is a fusion of my early love of all things textile, a two decade career in environmental consulting, followed by another decade in quality. This fusion has resulted in narrowing my focus in weaving to using sustainable yarns (wool, cotton, silk) up-cycled materials (VHS tape, commercial carpet yarn, plastic shopping bags) and repurposed fabrics (dead stock and remnants from professional decorators, estate sales, thrift shops). Sustainability, like most things is not static and this journey I'm on will require ongoing adjustments, new paths and learning from others. I hope you'll check in periodically to see how my journey is progressing.
How it’s Made
A story, a fairy tale if you will of making lemonade out of lemons. This piece was originally to be a warm cozy scarf with lots of drape, texture and fluttery fringe; however somewhere along the way the tension on one side of the loom went AWOL and the resulting scarf had a slight but definite curve. As this piece had been an experiment using yarn from a local purchase of seven partially used cones of fine cotton and acrylic yarn in various shades of brown, plus some chenille I had on hand the time required to try and correct the curve was not practical.
As happens when projects don't come out as I anticipate they move to the "let me think about this" shelf fortunately this one didn't spend too much time there. A crossbody bag with lots of bouncy fringe seemed possible, but I needed a pattern, instead of a fly by the seat of my pants idea. So the hunt began and eventually I found a pattern that would allow me to include the eight or so inches of fringe as a focal point. After making a sample (without fringe) using Twig and Tales pattern and remnants from the kitchen curtains I knew I was on the right path.
