About this Product

This listing is for the pillow cover only, a pillow form or insert is NOT included.

Dimensions of pillow cover -
Length - 20.5 inches
Width - 18.5 inches

Construction of pillow cover -
Double clasped weft design created using white and red t-shirt yarn on one side and white and black on the other side.

Double clasped weft requires alternating three weft yarns for each row of weaving, instead of changing out a color at the end of a row - this takes longer but results in a unique design that can be unstructured like this pillow cover or very structured to resemble a city scape or piano keys.

The selvage edges of the rug sections were sewn together and not turned to the inside, because of the thickness of the fabric and because they add an interesting texture to the edges. To assemble the pillow cover I used hook and loop tape instead of a zipper, due to the thickness of the pillow cover fabric.

Woven on my 1930’s Union rug loom, this pillow is constructed using the same poly-cotton warp thread I use for rag rugs. The poly-cotton blend is more durable than the original all cotton warp. Cast off t-shirts are washed, sorted by color and then cut into one inch strips to provide the weft yarn.

For the photos, I used a regular size fiber-fill bed pillow (20 by 26 inches). This creates a very full and firm shape and you may prefer a smaller pillow form for a more cushy affect. There is no correct size only what makes you happy.

Care Instructions -
Your pillow cover can be vacuumed between washing.
Machine wash in warm water on permanent press cycle.
Launder pillow cover closed, so hook and loop tape doesn't catch other fabrics.

Meet the Maker

Lyon Handwovens is a fusion of my early love of all things textile, a two decade career in environmental consulting, followed by another decade in quality. This fusion has resulted in narrowing my focus in weaving to using sustainable yarns (wool, cotton, silk) up-cycled materials (VHS tape, commercial carpet yarn, plastic shopping bags) and repurposed fabrics (dead stock and remnants from professional decorators, estate sales, thrift shops). Sustainability, like most things is not static and this journey I'm on will require ongoing adjustments, new paths and learning from others. I hope you'll check in periodically to see how my journey is progressing.
