Meet the Maker

Hello. I was a special education teacher for thirty-four years! I am now retired and am spending much of my free time sewing.

My mom did a lot of sewing when I was a child. She made most of our clothes until we were old enough to protest. We did not appreciate having unique, homemade clothing at that age.

I took an interest in learning to sew at a young age so my mom started teaching me. I sewed off and on throughout my life when I had extra time. Now that I have more time to sew I am honing my skills and learning new skills by reading books and watching videos. I enjoy the creative process.

How it’s Made

It takes a lot of time to make a quilt, even a small one. I enjoy the creative process, so I never use a pattern. I choose my own fabrics and put them together in a pattern of my own creation. I am able to follow patterns, and do when I make my purses and aprons, however, my favorite thing is putting fabrics together in my own way.

The first step is cutting out the squares or rectangles from the fabric. This step takes several hours and is important because cutting the pieces accurately makes the quilt come together more evenly. The next step is sewing those fabric pieces together to create the top of the quilt. This can take from five to ten hours depending on the complexity of the quilt top. Once the quilt top is created and all of the seams are pressed flat, the step that actually makes it quilting begins. This step is the most difficult because it requires lining up the quilt top, the batting, and the back of the quilt. The three layers must be straight and taut so that the fabric won't move when it is being sewn together. I use close to 100 safety pins to pin together these three layers! Next, the three layers are sewn together. This is quilting. It can be time consuming because the seams have to be close enough together that the batting will not bunch up when the quilt is washed. I generally quilt in straight lines so that the seams do not distract from the design of the quilt. Finally, the edges of the quilt are trimmed perfectly straight and the binding is put on. Sewing the binding to the back of the quilt is usually done by hand so this step can also be quite time consuming.

Whew!!! Quilters are definitely people who enjoy creativity or they would not do all this work!
