How it’s Made
Each of our stunning wooden sculptures, crafted from premium royal paulownia wood, is a labor of love, brought to life through traditional and modern woodworking techniques in Gatlinburg, TN. Here’s a glimpse into the meticulous process behind these rustic woodland masterpieces:
1. Selecting the Wood: We start with high-quality royal paulownia wood, known for its lightweight yet durable properties and beautiful grain. This sustainable wood is carefully chosen for its natural texture, which adds character to each sculpture.
2. Chainsaw Carving: The initial shaping begins with expert chainsaw carving. Our artisans, Jake and Angie, use powerful chainsaws to rough out the bear’s form—whether it’s a fox, climbing bear, a standing bear with cubs, or another design. This step transforms the raw log into a recognizable bear shape, capturing the essence of its strength and personality.
3. Refining with Rotary Tools: For the intricate details, we switch to precision rotary tools. These tools allow us to carve fine features like the bear’s fur, facial expression, paws, and any accompanying elements (like cubs or posts). This step brings out the lifelike texture and depth, ensuring every curve and contour tells a story.
4. Adding Color with Acrylic Paint: To enhance the natural beauty of the wood and highlight the bear’s features, we apply hand-painted acrylic paints. These vibrant, weather-resistant paints bring out the rich blacks, browns, and earthy tones, giving each bear its distinctive woodland look while preserving the rustic aesthetic.
5. Sealing with Spar Varnish: To protect the sculpture and ensure its longevity—whether displayed indoors or outdoors—we seal each piece with a coat of spar varnish. This marine-grade varnish provides a durable, weather-resistant finish that guards against moisture, UV rays, and wear, maintaining the sculpture’s beauty for years to come.
6. Final Touches and Quality Check: After the varnish dries, we inspect each sculpture for perfection, making any final adjustments. The piece is then mounted on its base (like a marble or wooden stand) or prepared for mounting on a post, ensuring it’s ready to become a cherished part of your rustic decor.
Every sculpture is handmade with care, reflecting the passion and craftsmanship of Jake and Angie’s Woodart. From the raw log to the finished masterpiece, these bears embody the spirit of the Smoky Mountains, crafted to bring warmth and nature into your home or outdoor space.
