About this Product

Handmade decorative egg, sealed with a lacquer finish to protect the design. The decorative eggs are hand blown and hollow. Each egg comes with wooden display stand. The eggs are sourced from a local farm so they vary widely in base color making each egg truly unique and beautiful. Also, the eggs are much stronger and smoother because they are from wonderfully cared for chickens.
Pysanky –from pysaty (писати), "to write"– are raw eggs created with the wax-resist method (Resist dyeing). The designs are "written" in hot wax with a pinhead or a special stylus called a pysachok (писачок) or a kistka (кістка) which has a small funnel attached to hold a small amount of liquid wax. The word that is used to describe the egg actually comes from the Ukrainian verb pysaty, which means "to write". Wooden eggs and beaded eggs are often referred to as "pysanky" because they mimic the decorative style of pysanky in a different medium.

How it’s Made

Each egg is carefully selected from our local farms. The design is sketched on with a graphite pencil. A kitzka is held over an open candle flame to melt beeswax to be drawn over those lines. Each color requires a different dye bath, so more colors equals more creation time. The colors are applied in reverse order (light to dark) until the entire egg is coated in beeswax. Then the finished egg is held over candle flame to "reveal" the design. After the egg is dry, a small hole is drilled into the egg to clear our the contents. The egg is then lacquered to protect the design.

Shop Policies

Custom and personalized orders

We love trying to make new things, but our first attempt at a new design is not necessarily sale ready. Things get bent and re-bent. Things get taken off and put on; different sized wires are used to see what looks best.

When everything is just so, then it is remade from scratch so it is as pretty as it can be. If you want a completely new design order (not just a modification of an existing design-- with changes to the stone or size or metal), it it is literally being remade in at least two versions of the design.

Once we agree on a customized design, you can't change it in major ways, without having to start the whole process from scratch. Our time is precious we have dozens of projects going, only a few of which appear on this shop.

A velvet bag is the only gift wrapping available for them in order to protect the integrity of the egg shell.
