About this Product
A beautiful white and blue linen scarf. It has been made by hand dying light weight linen with Organic Indigo combining Shibori and Ombre techniques. After the dying is complete it has been thoroughly rinsed and washed to remove excess dye. All four sides have a row of stitching close to the edge to prevent the edge from continuing to fray while preserving the "raw edge " look. This scarf measures approximately 20" x 72".

Meet the Maker
Hi, my name is Dawn and I LOVE to make beautiful things. My mother was a maker who inspired and encouraged me. She taught me to sew and knit. I enjoyed being able to make clothing that was uniquely my own. I dabbled in crochet, embroidery, basket weaving and more. After 27 years of making custom swimwear; I decided to focus on all the other creative things I love to do. Fabric dying has become a way for me to create unique fabrics that I can turn into beautiful accessories and home goods. Weaving is another way to create one of a kind fabric.

How it’s Made
Dying with Indigo is a magical process. First you must make an Indigo vat. I have used a 5 gallon paint pail to make my vat. Indigo starts out as a beautiful deep shade of blue. But it is not capable of dying fabric by it self. You must use very hot water and couple of other products to prepare the fabric to absorb the die and to balance the pH of the vat. It takes anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days for the vat to be ready for dipping the fabric. during this time the fabric is folded, tied and wrapped to create a resist to the dye. When its ready it is no longer a beautiful shade of blue. It will be a greenish/yellowish color with a copper looking surface. There will be blue bubbles floating on the surface; that's called an indigo flower. Then, when you finally dip the fabric it turns a green color! About 10 minutes of contact with air and the green turns blue. Repeating that process gives an increasingly deeper shade of blue. It is art and science rolled into one. And very messy!
This scarf was made by using both Ombre and Shibori folding.
