Meet the Maker

Welcome to my shop!

I knew at age three that I wanted to be an artist, though I didn't actually know what an artist was. I just knew I wanted to create pictures as beautiful as those in my storybooks. Life took me in many different directions before I was finally able to study and create art in a serious way. After working several years as a rehabilitation counselor, I made the decision to follow my passion for art and I went back to college and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. I taught part-time at a local university and also taught private and group art classes in my home studio. I enjoyed that work very much. However, recently, I decided to concentrate on creating art full-time, thus the opening of my GoImagine shop. My primary goal is to create original art that is affordable, so I’ve chosen to work on a small scale in order to accomplish that. I’ve also chosen to embrace a traditional approach—creating art entirely by hand—no mass production, no prints, no computers, no digital elements or AI, just drawing and painting by hand. Each piece that I create is a unique, original work of art.

My inspiration comes mostly from nature, but I also just love to experiment and explore styles and techniques, anything art related really. You'll find me drawing and painting in my home studio most every day, supervised by two cats who keep a watchful eye on each piece I complete.

How it’s Made

Each autumn I collect ginkgo leaves. The ginkgo tree is native to Kentucky and there are several in my neighborhood. Ginkgos are unique in their leaf-shedding process; they release their leaves all at once, often going from fully leafed to completely bare in less than 24 hours. So I have a limited window for collecting the perfect leaves. After gathering them, I press and preserve the leaves. The most challenging aspect of creating a butterfly from a leaf is splitting the stem to form the antennae. Once the leaves are dry, I seal them for durability, then paint them with India ink and acrylic paint, and finally, seal them again. I also paint a background for the shadow box and mount the butterfly 1/4 inch above the background.
