About this Product

Get ‘em while they’re hot! Molten hot!

This holiday season I’m selling hand blown glass sufganiot, or jelly donuts, a traditional food served with plenty of love during Hannukah, the Jewish festival of lights. Made with iridescent glass, the donut radiates rainbows when light passes through it.

Frooting Bodies ~ By Leigh

Hello! My name is Leigh, I am a mixed-media Artist who is exploring play and decay ~ I identify my personal style as "sophisticated seven year old" and love to create art that adds a sense of whimsy to people's lives. I make glassblown art, ecclectic earrings, and am searching for ways to foster (and fund) my exploration of new crafts. Consider supporting my journey by following along (instagram: frooting_bodies) or ordering some art!

How it’s Made

I begin by dipping a metal pipe into the glass furnace which is kept at around 2400 Degrees Farenheit (1320 Degrees Celcius). From there, I roll the glass in an iris gold "frit," or small grains of colored glass. This is what gives the donut its iridescence. After adding another layer of clear glass, I constantly need to blow more air into the glass and rotate it on a metal pipe, not letting it give into the forces of gravity. Glass that cools too fast will crack, so I keep the glass hot in reheating chambers. When I am happy with the shape, I have an assistant bring over a "hot bit" of lipstick red glass which I smoosh onto the top of the donut! I then apply a few droplets of water to the thinnest part of the glass where it is connected to the pipe. This water shocks the glass and a light tap separates the sculpture from the pipe! Since glass that cools too quickly will crack, I place the donut into an "annealer" which acts like an oven that holds the temperature of the glass more stable and lowers it slowly to room temperature. Finally, I grind off any sharp bits and drill a hole so it can be filled with light!
