About this Product

These gemstone dangle earrings are handmade using "black gold" amazonite cubes and cherry quartz round beads. Part of my "Touch of Gold" series, they are accented with sterling silver beads and segments of gold filled flat chains which flicker in the light. They're sure to attract attention. The sterling silver ear wires are also carefully handmade.

Length: 1.75" (44 mm) from top of ear wire. See image with ruler. Width: 0.25" (6 mm) Dimensions are approximate.

Amazonite is a bluish-green to greenish blue feldspar mineral. It is rarely used to produce mass-market jewelry because customers are not familiar with it, but it has been used to make jewelry for over 2000 years.

Natural gemstones have variations in color and texture and therefore each pair of earrings is unique. The images shown here are representative of the stones in the earrings you will receive. However, the color selected for this listing is from the lighter color variations of Black Gold Amazonite I have in stock as shown in the images. I match the stones for each pair of earrings the best I can from the stock I have available.

Gold filled metal is 1/20 14k gold by weight The gold cladding is bonded to a brass core. The thickness of the metal cladding is typically 50 to 100 times  thicker than typical "plated" metal and is usually thick enough to be stamped or engraved without exposing the brass core. Unlike plated metal, the gold layer is not likely to wear off with normal use.

Meet the Maker

I am a retired metrology engineer (metrology is the science of measurement). It's very important to me to stay active doing things that I enjoy.  I love working with metals and beautiful gemstones, so I make jewelry, mostly for women. My motto is: "Make it pretty. Make it special. Make it for her."

I work mostly with sterling silver and gemstones, both cut gems and beads. However, I also work with silver and gold filled metals.  Occasionally, I'll make something using other metals, but it will be clearly stated in the descriptions. Many of my items are hand soldered, including (some) gem settings, hook clasps, extender chains and decorative components and findings. I make my own sawn jump rings down to 1.5 mm inside diameter.

Some days I feel crafty and make dangly earrings, other days I feel like soldering settings for a fine jewelry piece, but I always make each piece with love and consideration for the customer.

Most of my listings are ready to ship but will need a final inspection and cleaning. I also make my own custom gift boxes. Each piece is shipped with the gift box, cleaning instructions, polishing cloth, anti-tarnish bag and tab. Earrings will also include additional silicone back stoppers.

As a final note: I do make most of my French hook ear wires. Yes, I could purchase them wholesale and drop the price a few bucks, but in my opinion, my handmade ear wires are soooo much better and not that much more expensive.

How it’s Made

Beads:

Beads are carefully selected for color, size, texture and shape. Then wire-wrapped to sterling silver head pins.

Chain:

Gold filled 1.2 mm flat oval chain segments are carefully cut to length and threaded onto gold filled jump rings.

Ear wires:

Handmade ball and coil French hook ear wires are made in batches of about 25 pairs at a time. This makes the task faster and more efficient. It also helps to keep the size and shape more consistent.

First the coils are made using 24 ga wire. The wire is wound on a 21 ga hard brass stub. The coil ends are lightly sanded to remove burrs and sharp edges.

The ear wires are then carefully cut to length from 21 ga wire. One end is ground with a cup burr and a small loop is formed. The seamless silver ball and coil is added and the ear loop is formed using jewelry pliers. A wire mill is used to flatten the front of the loop to harden the wire which helps the ear loop hold it's shape. The forming is then completed and the tips of the ear wires are smoothed with a rotary cup burr.

A final inspection and shaping process involves making sure the ear wires are flat, removing any twists and correcting any deviation from the desired shape. The ear wires are then hallmarked and branded. Matched pairs are selected and kept together with a brass jump ring (which is not part of the product). The entire batch is then hardened and polished in a tumbler to provide a shiny finish.

The 21 gauge wire is stronger than the typical 22 gauge commercial ear wires and easier to fit through the ear than the larger 20 gauge wires.
