Meet the Maker

I’ve been a Maker since I was a young child.  I remember rushing to finish my worksheets in 1st grade so I could draw and color.  My parents engaged my creativity with origami books, watercolor sets, sketch pads, beads and yarn.  I was, and am, surrounded by women who love fiber arts.  My Grandma gifted me a stamped cross-stitch square and embroidery floss.  My Granny crocheted dozens of afghans of all sizes.  My Mom indulged my clumsy attempts at making my own clothing on a Singer Genie.   My best friend and I explored crochet and quilting.  My godmother showed me how to knit, but I could never get the hang of it!  During college I majored in Visual Art Education with a concentration in Fiber Arts.

I continue to explore different mediums - watercolor paint, embroidery, jewelry making and polymer clay.  I’ve created original  and published original crochet patterns (a collection of crochet plant patterns and holiday gnomes).

I sell online through Abby Farmer Creations.

I live in Dallas, Texas with my husband, Phil and our fur-babies, Duncan & Cassie.  I’ve been a member of Wycliffe since 2005 and work as the Canvas administrator for Dallas Int’l University.

How it’s Made

Creating an embroidery necklace like this involves several steps.  Here’s a general overview of the process:

Design:  The first step is to design the embroidery pattern for the necklace.  This can be done by sketching the desired floral pattern directly on the fabric or onto water-soluble stabilizer.

Materials:  I use fabric, embroidery floss in different shades, and needles for sewing.  I secure the fabric in an embroidery hoop to keep it taut.

Stitching: I use a variety of stitches including satin stitch, back stitch, French knots, and lazy daisy.  I use 1-3 strands of floss, depending on how dense the stitch-work is.  I love creating different textures with stitch combinations.

Finishing: Once I am done stitching, I remove the work from the embroidery hoop.  If needed, I place the fabric in water to dissolve the ink or stabilizer.  I add a running stitch outside the sitch work and I trim away any excess fabric and smooth it to remove wrinkles.

Assembly: I select a cabochon to fit the bezel.  I place it behind the fabric and tighten the running stitch

es to secure it.  Then, I securely glue the piece into the bezel and allow the glue to dry.

I add a necklace (chain or faux leather cord) to complete the necklace.
