Three Mountains Clay

Meet the Maker
Welcome to Three Mountains Clay! The name for my store comes from the location of my art studio in Tres Orejas, settled along the high altitude desert foothills below the tree line of the Carson National Forest, and just a couple miles past the chamiso sage covered mesa of Taos, New Mexico, USA. With spectacular views of the Rio Grande Gorge and bold presence of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, sunrise and sunset are the highlight of each and everyday, and living in harmony with nature is a part of my daily routine.
I have been a crafter and maker all of my life, and find great joy in creating my clay patterns and jewelry designs. I've learned new techniques and styles through out the years, and continuing to work with clay brings wonderful nostalgia and uplifting memories remembering all the friends and family that have been a part of my artistic path and journey. I am inspired daily from the beauty and charm of living in the American Southwest, and put a little bit of love and magic from the land of enchantment into every piece I create.
All my silver is ethically sourced in the United States from a nationally recognized jewelry wholesale supplier, Rio Grande Jewelry Supply, located right here in my home state of New Mexico.
How it’s Made
Start to finish, these polymer clay earrings and pendants require multiple skills and steps to complete. First, I prep and condition the clay, plan and build the patterns used, and then hand sculpt each item. Finally, I bake each piece in a low temperature oven, then once cooled, I add the sterling silver findings and hardware.
To pattern the clay, I use an adapted technique called Mokume Gane, that mimics an ancient Japanese craft, yet has been altered in medium and process for a modern day clay artist. I do not use molds or cutters, I only shape my items by hand. The only tools I use are a slicing blade to assist with cutting and shaping the clay, and a clay roller for smoothing the surface.
All my jewelry is made with love and care in my Three Mountains Clay Studio. :)
