Meet the Maker
I’ve been a Maker since I was a young child. I remember rushing to finish my worksheets in 1st grade so I could draw and color. My parents engaged my creativity with origami books, watercolor sets, sketch pads, beads and yarn.
I was, and am, surrounded by women who love fiber arts. My Grandma gifted me a stamped cross-stitch square and embroidery floss. My Granny crocheted dozens of Afghans of all sizes. My Mom indulged my clumsy attempts at making my own clothing on a Singer Genie. My best friend and I explored crochet and quilting. My godmother showed me how to knit, but I could never get the hang of it! During college I majored in Visual Art Education with a concentration in Fiber Arts.
I continue to explore different mediums - watercolor paint, embroidery, jewelry making and polymer clay. I’ve created original and published original crochet patterns (a collection of crochet plant patterns and holiday gnomes).
I sell my creations at Knick Knacks in Duncanville, TX and online through Abby Farmer Creations.
I live in Duncanville, Texas with my husband, Phil and our fur-babies, Duncan & Cassie. I’ve been a member of Wycliffe since 2005. I currently work as the Canvas administrator for Dallas Int’l University.
How it’s Made
I love the delicate nature of embroidery, and how thread can be used as an artistic medium! I create each embroidery pendant by sketching a design on a neutral cotton fabric using a Frixion pen. Then, I stretch the fabric in an embroidery hoop. I select several colors of embroidery floss and stitch the design color by color. Once the stitches are complete I cut out the stitch work, leaving a border. The fabric is stretched around a glass cabochon and secured with some stitches. The cabochon is then secured in a metal bezel to create a lovely piece of jewelry.
