About this Product

This scarf was handwoven from repurposed cotton yarn that in a previous life existed as two separate 1990's era Christmas sweaters - actually just the sweater arms, the bodies of the sweaters moved on to their second careers as pillows. You can read more about this in the How it's made section.

Anyway, this red and blue cotton scarf with a rustic texture was woven on my smaller rigid heddle loom in an unbalanced plaid and measures 58-inches in length and 7.5-inches in width. It's finished at each end with approximately 3-inches of twisted fringe.

As always I recommend using cold water and either washing by hand with a mild soap or on the delicate/gentle cycle for machine washing. Lay flat to dry and iron as necessary.

Meet the Maker

Lyon Handwovens is a fusion of my early love of all things textile, a two decade career in environmental consulting, followed by another decade in quality. This fusion has resulted in narrowing my focus in weaving to using sustainable yarns (wool, cotton, silk) up-cycled materials (VHS tape, commercial carpet yarn, plastic shopping bags) and repurposed fabrics (dead stock and remnants from professional decorators, estate sales, thrift shops). Sustainability, like most things is not static and this journey I'm on will require ongoing adjustments, new paths and learning from others. I hope you'll check in periodically to see how my journey is progressing.

How it’s Made

On a mission to shift making most of my products from sustainable materials and the remainder from materials I'm trying to keep out of the landfill, for as long as possible, this project embodies both using sustainable materials and keeping two, no longer trendy, Christmas sweaters out of the landfill for the time being. Since our family spends much of our holiday time (Thanksgiving and Christmas) together binging on movies and eating too much, large comfy pillows seemed like a natural for these two 1990's kitschy sweaters. Since “lounging on the floor” pillows don't need arms I suddenly had access to a project I had been reading about but wasn't sure I wanted to try - recovering yarn from discarded sweaters.

After unraveling all four arms and determining I had enough yarn to make a scarf (actually two, the second one exists as cakes of yarn at this writing) I got started. With no pre-conceived pattern in mind I let the length of yarn determine when I changed colors in both the warp and weft, resulting in an unbalanced plaid that is heavy on red at one end and blue at the other end.
