About this Product
Packable and machine washable this log tote is great for home, cabin, lake, RV or tent camping. Handwoven on my rug loom this rag rug firewood carrier or log sling can be used to supply wood or kindling for fireplaces, fire pits and bonfires.
Each carrier measures 20 inches wide by 36 inches in length, with the nylon webbing straps providing a drop of 11 inches.
I’m not sure why, several years ago, the idea of a firewood/log carrier came to me, but I do know that I had just taken three lengths of rag rug woven pieces off my rug loom that did not say “tote bag” to me, which is the collection I was working on at the time. The other lengths in this warp did say totes and had linings and straps added and large tote bags were assembled. But these three rather rustic, bumpy, not as I had envisioned pieces did not want to be tote bags.
Somewhere along the way, after I discarded the idea of making them into unlined bags, I had this one yard length of rag rug with handles - too small for a picnic blanket or a yoga mat, too big and open for most harvesting from the garden. But wait, what about picking up all the small dead limbs from our walnut tree? Every spring there are small limbs scattered beneath this tree. Great kindling once it’s gathered, it’s the gathering part that’s frustrating - do you just pick up what you can carry in your arms, find a bucket or box to gather it in? And if you’re taking it inside who wants some dirty old bucket getting mud on the carpet?
So, I added handles to the other two and threw all three in the car for an across the state trip to see family. Both households got their pick and put them to use to not only pick up limbs but move their stacked firewood into the house or to their fire pit. Success! These odd pieces had found their calling. Not only did I find homes for my prototypes, but I came home with a box of remnants that had been included in an estate auction as part of a package deal. Fast forward to today and that yardage, of large checks of black and white with roosters, has been reborn as a firewood/log carrier.
Easily packed for travel to your favorite fishing or hunting cabin, vacation, lake home or even just a late afternoon picnic in the park.A unique housewarming, Father’s Day or grooms men gift.
Easy care - just shake it out and throw in the washer and dryer as needed. Like a rag rug this carrier is made to hold up to regular use and cleaning.

Lyon Handwovens
Meet the Maker
Lyon Handwovens is a fusion of my early love of all things textile, a two decade career in environmental consulting, followed by another decade in quality. This fusion has resulted in narrowing my focus in weaving to using sustainable yarns (wool, cotton, silk) up-cycled materials (VHS tape, commercial carpet yarn, plastic shopping bags) and repurposed fabrics (dead stock and remnants from professional decorators, estate sales, thrift shops). Sustainability, like most things is not static and this journey I'm on will require ongoing adjustments, new paths and learning from others. I hope you'll check in periodically to see how my journey is progressing.
How it’s Made
Using my grandparents Union 36 rug loom, which I've had for almost 25 years but have only used the last 15, I use the same 8/4 warp yarn I use for rugs and tote bags. The weft comes from remnants of home decor fabric from an estate sale. I cut weft strips on the horizontal of large pieces of fabric as that direction minimizes any stretch in the material making it easier to keep the selvedge edges even. The ends of these strips are machine sewn at a 45-degree angle, the resulting seam will lay flat and extends across several warp threads making a smooth transition. If the ends were simply sewn together vertically all of the seam would be packed in the same area, usually resulting in a noticeable bump.
