Meet the Maker

North Side Girls was founded by two sisters and their aunt who taught them both the craft of traditional loom weaving. Currently the eldest sister, Aisha, has taken the skills she's learned and is determined to share her wonderful hand weaving with as many people as possible.

You'll be amazed at the difference between handmade and mass-produced! The unique colour combinations, the thick soft texture, the joy each piece will bring to your home, every single piece encapsulates it all. We've been told many times they look almost too beautiful to use, but we promise our textiles are durable and meant to be used!

How it’s Made

Handwoven on a traditional floor loom using 100% cotton our tea towels are made with an exquisite eye for colour and meticulous attention to detail.

  1. Every single thread is individually wound into a warp (all the vertical cloth threads) before being dressed on the loom.
  2. There, the warp is then attached to the back beam before being made sure every thread is consistently taught so that every inch of cloth is as even as possible.
  3. Next is threading each thread by hand through the heddles which are attached to the shafts. (the parts that move up and down on the loom)
  4. After that is threading through a reed which keeps everything evenly separated so the cloth stays the width desired.
  5. Last is tying on everything that has been threaded so far onto the front beam keeping everything as evenly taught as possible.
  6. Now the weft (the horizontal threads) is ready to be woven!

Every set of tea towels is woven in sets of 6 at a time which takes approx. 1 week from start to finish.
