JLA Carving
Meet the Maker
Hello, I am Jeffrey Aikens, a wood carver from Pennsylvania. I have been carving since the early 80s, which helps me keep my sanity after working on computers all day. I have my BFA from Wilkes University and work professionally as an Art Director. I try and put my own spin on my carvings keeping things whimsical and a little quirky. I use a lot of basswood from PA, but it sometimes has imperfections and is darker with more grain than typical white basswood. I try to incorporate the imperfections into pieces and not avoid them.
How it’s Made
All my carvings are carved from basswood or butternut unless otherwise noted in the description and are painted with acrylics, watercolors, or oil paints. I paint my pieces in multiple layers and custom shades; it can be a time-consuming process.
Most of my basswood comes from Pennsylvania and is darker and harder than wood from the Midwest. I am an Art Director by trade and have been carving since the early 1980s. My work has a whimsical style, and I always try to put a unique spin on each character. I am grateful for your time and interest in my pieces.
